The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson is the most popular pairing in the Sherlock Holmes fandom. There has been some sort of speculation that Holmes and Watson were in a romantic relationship, and stories to that effect, for decades. However, the pairing being explicitly romantic, instead of subtextual, was rather rare, until fannish interest in the pairing expanded exponentially during the late 2000s and the 2010s with the release of the Sherlock Holmes 2009 film and the BBC's 2010 TV series Sherlock.
