A fancafe is an online message board dedicated to a specific K-pop artist or group, where fans can interact with each other and sometimes with the idols themselves. Fancafes are typically hosted on South Korean web portals such as Daum or Naver.

Examples

For a list of fancafes on Daum, see this list.

Features and Structure

Fancafes usually have various sections, such as:

  • Announcements: Official updates, schedules, and notices from the artist's management or company.
  • Free Board: General discussion among fans.
  • Gallery: Photos and videos of the artist, often shared by fansites.
  • Letter Board: Where fans can post messages or letters addressed to the artist, and in some cases, the artist may respond.

Some fancafes also have exclusive content accessible only to leveled-up members or official fanclub members.

Membership and Leveling Up

To join a fancafe, fans typically need to create an account on the hosting platform and pass a series of questions or tests to prove their dedication and knowledge of the artist. This process is known as "leveling up."[1]

Fancafes often have a hierarchy of membership levels, such as:

  • Associate Members: New members who have not yet leveled up.
  • Regular Members: Fans who have passed the leveling up process and gained access to more content.
  • Official Fan Club Members: Fans who have purchased a physical membership kit or paid a membership fee, granting them access to exclusive content and benefits.
