Reallycorking was interviewed in 2007 for the fourth in the Fanartist Focus interview series at Twinspiration, a Harry Potter LiveJournal community for James/Oliver and Fred/George twincest.

Introduction

The star of today's Fanartist Focus is truly a seminal figure in the fanart arena, the fantastic reallycorking. Now let me begin with an interesting bit of trivia about today's guest. When I began doing research in preparation for this whole twincest fanartist interview project, I conducted an informal survey of internet twincest fans, asking them to nominate their favorite twincest artists and artworks. The resulting answers so consistently mentioned reallycorking that her inclusion here was a given. I feel I also must mention what a true testament it is to her talent for so many twincest fans to regard an artist so highly who has never actually painted the twins by themselves in any twincesty artwork. Such is the impact, skill and genius of reallycorking!

Twinspiration's petquality [mrsrittenrotten] asks reallycorking her standard set of questions, as well as a few extras, so we can all get a glimpse at the artist, the art, and the inner twinny machinations of RC!

Excerpts

How did you first get interested in doing fanart in general and slash/twincest art specifically?

I've been interested in fanart for a long time--even before I actually knew what it was. Books have always inspired me to draw. When I look through my old sketchpads from when I was a kid, I can easily name books or movies as inspiration for most of the pictures. But what really got me into online fanart, specifically Harry Potter fanart, was art by Magsby, on the Fictionalley front page several years ago. I thought "Wow! People are drawing their own versions of the Harry Potter characters; I like this!" Soon I stumbled upon glockgal, fiendling, Duckpuppy, and then BAM! Fanart explosion, and I couldn't get enough of it! It took me more than a year of lurking before I decided to try my hand at it myself and create my own journal.

What are some of your main goals when painting twincest pieces? Do you have any problems or preferences you notice while you are creating your art?

Goal number one: Mischief, always mischief! That is my biggest intrigue about the twins; they've always got a trick up their sleeve or something amusing to say (err...in fact, my username is actually derived from a Fred or George comment). So if I can convey that in a drawing, I have accomplished my twincest goal. :) Physically, I prefer the twins to be powerful and athletic. From canon, I get the impression of compactness and control--they're Beaters, so I would assume that they're quick, efficient and strong. Mmmm! So that's what I aim to produce in twins fanart.

Who are your favorite fanartists, favorite websites for fanart?

Oh, there are so many! Just to name a few: glockgal, who I've already gushed over, fiendling's sense of humor and enormous skill, mudblood428's wonderful character depictions and attention to detail, lizardspots for her versatility and pure talent, Neb, who's art IS Harry Potter, buttfacemakani who is just hilarious, with skills that blow my mind, and celestialsoda for her compelling portraits and rich colors and textures. Argh, I really hate playing favorites, because there are so many more that I truly admire. :x

What, in your opinion, can be improved upon in the fanart community overall?

Oh, that's a really tough question. I have a high opinion of the HP fanart community in general--we have a lot of really great resources at our disposal. There's artbeta, where we can get constructive criticism on works in progress from fellow artists. There's hp_fanartists, a place where fanartists can generally come together, ask questions, share advice, etc. accio_newbies is a place where newbie artists can find oldbie mentors, and hp_fringeart is a great, non-threatening, no-pressure community for new artists to post their work. hp_art_daily is an art recs newsletter by fanartists. There are even communities like hp_inspirado, for art tutorials, visual_refs, where people can post photo reference material, and art_commissions, a resource for both artists interested in taking commissions and people interested in commissioning art. In short, I think the HP fanart community has a lot going for it, and I certainly can't think of anything it's lacking.
