MrsRittenrotten was interviewed in 2007 for the twelveth in the Fanartist Focus interview series at Twinspiration, a Harry Potter LiveJournal community for James/Oliver and Fred/George twincest.

MrsRittenrotten had been the interviewer for the previous Fanartist Focus interviews. Twinspiration co-mod a_carnal_mink took over for MrsRittenrotten's interview.

Introduction

A very special treat, indeed, for us all this month, twinfans! Every month throughout 2007, petquality [mrsrittenrotten] brought us all a sublime featured interview with a different fanartist. Over the course of eleven interviews, she shared with us a rare glimpse into the minds and labours of some of the talented Potterverse fanartists, her own insight as a visual artist lending her interviews authority and astuteness, but never stomping on the obvious joy of her inner fangirl. She was our representative, guys, one of our own setting out to generously share her wonder and joy with the rest of us, and we here at twinspiration believe she did splendidly. [...]

Notice something though? All the fanart is Fred & George! Not that that's a bad thing, of course, but twinspiration being a community dedicated to not just the Weasley twins but the darling Phelps brothers as well, it's maybe about time we had a little taste of the delicious morsels on the RPS side, non? petquality was as determined a hunter you've ever seen – the RPS fanartists delighting in James & Oliver must be out there somewhere and she was going to find them! But when every virtual stone had been prised up and peered under, I gladly pointed out that there is, indeed, just such an artist. An artist who truly appreciates and conveys the twin bond, the brotherliness, the love. This artist, ladies and gentlemen, manages to capture the disarming beauty, the boyish glee, the lanky manliness, the quiet confidence of the brothers Phelps with such aplomb, such grace, that the simple line of an eyebrow or the toning of a lock of dyed hair can leave one breathless. And as if that's not enough – she paints Fred & George as well! Ever generous with her time and talents, this month's featured fanartist, and the last in this series, has even given us a delicate kiss of gift-art. Fellow twinfans, I am delighted to share with you the deliciousness of our very own petquality. Enjoy!

Excerpts

How did you first get interested in doing fanart in general and slash/twincest art specifically?

I did what I thought was a one-time attempt at art illustrating a scene from "Sunshine III", a Phelpscest story I really loved, as a gift to the author, anal_cram_ink. It got such an enthusiastic response from the small circle of twincest fans who saw it that I was encouraged to do more. I'd been toying with the idea of trying my hand at some HP fanart for a while, but once I started doing the Phelps twincest art, I found my niche. I really don't consider myself an active participant in the fanartist community, since I have done very little HP pieces, (two Fred/George things is the extent of it!). I haven't introduced my twincest artwork anywhere else but my LJ, gay_fanart, and here at twinspiration. I'd like to find out what the fanart comm thinks of RPS fanart, though, because I don't see too much of it around. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

Do you paint other twins or just Fred and George?

I've done a few non-slashy illustrations of James/Oliver and Fred/George for the website Twice As Nice in the past, but for the most part I've largely concentrated on RPS twincest scenarios featuring James and Oliver Phelps. I'm quite obsessed with them, so it's the obvious outlet. But I've done two Fred/George twincest pieces, and liked the freedom of not having to worry about realistically matching a real person's features, especially in a forum where viewers know their faces so well that they'll expect to be able to recognise each twin. You all know the subtle differences between James and Oliver's faces, so I gotta make sure I get them down right. I DO hope to do more Fred/George again soon, though.

Who are your favorite fanartists, favorite websites for fanart?

There are so many! I can enjoy any art which depicts the twins, no matter what the artistic style is. I am constantly amazed, though, at the level of commitment, the volume of output, and the overall quality of most fanart! The fact that it's done out of sheer love of the fandom characters, not for money, just floored me at first. As a RL artist whose work is done on an individual commission basis, I was quite humbled by this! It made me re-think my attitude towards some aspects of my art. Making art for the sheer love of it rather than a paycheck. It's been a long time since I'd felt that motivation.

My favorite sites to see fanart were the sadly closed smut_wednesday, hp_fanart, hp_fringe_art, hpart, hp_slashart, hpsmart, fuckedupfanart, daily_deviant, pornish_pixies, and of course, all the twin comms like twinspiration! I really love individual artist's private art LJ's, too, it's great to see the things each artist does in their own fandom as well as HP. Every artist I've interviewed this past year is included in my top favorite choices, but I also quite like undun_oops, tripperfunster, sherant, ac1dburn, and swtalmnd.

Where can your art be seen online?

My LJ is the only place I post my twincest art: petquality [previously mrsrittenrotten], and usually here at twinspiration, too. My art posts are locked, and you must be over 18 to friend that journal. When I do post art, which is sadly infrequently these days, please leave comments! Other twinfans' love and input is the only reason I do it, and I really appreciate feedback, of all kinds. All artists do. Commissions are nice, but comments and discussion is the best! I need to know others dig what I do, otherwise there's no point in bothering, to me.
