Escapade is a meta fanvid about slash fans attending the Escapade convention during the 1990s. It features clips of fans attending panels, watching the vid show and buying and selling fanzines. It is a meta commentary about in person gatherings of slash fandom. As of 2024, the Escapade convention is still being held in person (with some virtual events)

Background

In 1996, vidder Stacey Doyle attended the Escapade slash convention and recorded 2 hours of video footage with permission of the convention organizers and attendees. The amateur footage shot on a handheld camcorder without any microphone or audio support was later incorporated (without audio) into her fanvid "Escapade" which debuted at Escapade 1998. The original footage was later transferred to SHVS video and digitized by Morgan Dawn in 2024. The video files have been given to the Escapade organizers and the original SVHS video tapes will be donated to the Stacey Doyle collection at Texas A&M University.

Two versions of the fanvid were shown - the second one with brief clips of a male stripper who was hired one year.

Reception

Morgan Dawn posted a few comments about the fanvids to the Virgule-L mailing list after the songtape was mailed out to the attendees. It is quoted here with permission

Just got both the Escapade tape and the "Sentinel Blooper reel" in the mail (same day). Loved Stacey's Escapade video (finally able to show my SO some faces to go along with the names) and Katherine Scarritt's vids. (who can forget "Tainted Love"?)[1]
