Canon Background

Egeria was originally a Goa'uld queen, who realized the wrongs she and others of her kind were doing. Egeria is kind and selfless, and proud of what her offspring have become.

History

She turned against the Goa'uld and started the Tok'ra - the rebellion against Ra and other Goa'uld System Lords. She is the queen mother of the Tok'ra, and has given birth to the vast majority of them. The name Tok'ra means 'Against Ra'.

She was hunted by Ra and later captured and imprisoned in a stasis jar in a temple on the planet Pangar. Centuries later, the Pangarans found her and used he for medical experimentations and kept her under horrible conditions. 50 years later, she was dying from the bad conditions she had been kept under, as well as the stress of forced breeding of millions of symbiotes - who were all killed and ground up for use in drugs.

Egeria had attempted to stop the Pangarans in the only way she could; by sabotaging her young. This meant the drugs made from them was not as effective as it should have been, but the Pangarans could not stop using it, since that would have meant their death.

Shortly before Egeria died, the Tau'ri had discovered her and informed the Tok'ra. They then arrived and demanded her freedom, pointing out it was an insult against them all to keep their founder - a sentient being . under these conditions. As well, the Tok'ra were a dying race: they have no queen to breed more symbiotes, and they were dying off from attrition - often a new host could not be found in time, and being an illegal, underground resistance is dangerous. The Tok'ra freed her, but Egeria was too weak to survive. Before she died, she helped cure the Pangarans from the dependence of the drug. She forgave them for what they had done, and did not want them to suffer.

Fandom

Egeria is not surprising very well liked among those who like the Tok'ra. She founded the Tok'ra and spawned the majority of them, and she is shown as kind and forgiving on the show.

Fanfiction

She is portrayed in a very positive light. The only (part) exception are stories telling about how she became Tok'ra, since she was a Goa'uld queen at first and thus likely must have done evil things at some point. These stories tell about how she changed and why, and are some of the most popular gen stories about her.

Despite being well liked, she does not have much fanfiction written for her, and most of it is gen. There are some het - generally stories taking place at the time of SG-1, where she somehow survives and often takes a Tau'ri host (Samantha Carter or Janet Fraiser).

Examples of Fanfic

Gen

  • Birth of a Rebellion. Thousands of years ago the Goa'uld were much like they are today, save for one. That Goa'uld would travel down a path that would shake the balance of power among the System Lords and ultimately lead to a rebellion from within... PG
  • Stratagem. Challenge fic from Tok’ra Resistance. How does a young Queen find a mate, organise a rebellion and deal with wayward travellers? All while trying to survive amongst the backstabbing and intrigue in a Goa'uld court. PG
  • Early Beginnings: This story is about the very early days of the Tok'ra - starting before there were any. PG-13. No pairings.
  • [Turning Point] Egeria altered the genetic memory of her offspring, creating a new race. But what about Egeria herself? Born a Goa'uld, and torn between the influence of her inherited memory and the slow realization that she was living an evil lie… Written in response to the Tok'ra Resistance summer fic challenge-2005. The challenge was to write about the early days of the Tok'ra. The very early days in this case. This fic deals with one of the more uncomfortable aspects of Egeria's history. The Tok'ra are a different race because of their altered genetic memory, but Egeria herself didn’t have that advantage. She would have been born with the genetic memory of the Goa'uld queen who spawned her. GEN. PG-13
  • Turning Point (different one) Daniel Jackson is transported into the past, where he meets a Goa'uld like no other, one who will play an extraordinary role in history. Will Daniel's presence alter the course of that history or will it lead to something he could never have imagined? PG-13
  • Changes. SG-1 and the Tok'ra examine some ruins and comes across something which may change their lives. PG-13. Sam/Martouf/Lantash preship. Daniel/Anise/Freya preship. PG-13

Het

  • Where Destiny Leads. Egeria has been saved. They've made it out, haven't they? What kind of welcome will the Tok'ra give them...What will happen to them now? What does the future hold? Sam & Martouf/Lantash, Malek/Other. NC-17
  • Complications Sam becomes host to Egeria in a very AU version of The Cure. I moved the episode to third season. This has several advantages: 1) Egeria is not in as badly a shape, 2) SGC people, including O'Neill, is not as hostile towards the Tok'ra, as in later seasons, 3) Martouf/Lantash and Daniel are all alive. I believe that by third season, Sam has come enough to terms with her experiences with Jolinar that she would agree to become host in a situation such as this. Sam/Egeria/Martouf/Lantash. PG-13
