Edward Elric/Winry Rockbell is a pairing in the Fullmetal Alchemist fandom. It's canon in the manga and Brotherhood anime, and a fanon pairing (with canon moments) in the original anime.

Canon

Edward and Winry were childhood friends and neighbors, growing up together in the rural village of Resembool. When Ed loses his arm and leg after in his and his brother's attempt to bring their mother back to life, Winry builds him automail limbs and becomes his automail mechanic. After Ed joins the military he and Al avoid going home or contacting the Rockbells for several years, but as the brothers uncover more dangerous secrets about the country, Winry gets pulled in to their adventures.

Ed often says that she's "just his mechanic" when others tease him about their relationship. They have several iconic moments throughout the manga and Brotherhood anime.

In the 2003 anime, Ed and Winry end up living in separate worlds, and it is implied that they never meet again after the events of Conqueror of Shamballa. In the manga and the 2009 anime (Brotherhood), they end up together, and the final scene of the story is Ed proposing marriage to Winry.

Fandom

Edwin has long been a popular ship across the fandom. Among fans of the manga and newer anime, where the ship is canon, it probably the most popular ship along with RoyAi. Within '03 fandom RoyEd is notably more popular, but EdWin is still pretty common. On AO3, EdWin has fewer works than RoyEd in the fandom tags "Fullmetal Alchemist (Anime 2003)" and "Fullmetal Alchemist - All Media Types" but more works in "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Manga".[1]

Common Tropes and Fanon

They are a good example of the childhood friends to lovers trope. Other common themes in fanworks are young marriage and pregnancy, long distance relationships, and kidfic.

Ed and Winry argue dramatically and frequently in canon, and some fanworks play up their disputes, usually as snarky banter but sometimes as more serious fights. Other fanworks focus on how they care deeply for each other under all the bluster.

Controversies

RoyEd and EdWin shippers often get caught in the pro and anti shipper discussions.

Winry is often bashed as being abusive to Edward, something that's occasionally shown in works for other Edward-centered ships.

It wasn’t for lack of trying that she’s in this position. On both occasions when Ed called during his trip (twice in six months, and just to check in—a record, to be sure) she almost told him but didn’t. She’d wanted to, but allowed herself to fail under the pretense that it might keep him that much more focused, and thereby that much safer. Only now does she acknowledge that this reasoning was just cowardice behind an excuse. Ed at his most focused is just as prone to disaster as he would be walking blind into a firing range. This visit only proves it.
Post-108. Epilogue to FMA, featuring small children and things blowing up. And also world domination, because Roy.
Ed has a past with Ling. Winry finds this... well, hilarious.
Ishvalan AU It’s a year after the Promised Day, and Fuhrer Grumman, with General Mustang and his crew’s assistance, wants to restore Ishval to its previous glory. When negotiations between Amestris and Ishval convene, why does a certain golden-eyed former alchemist seem so interested? Just what has he been hiding for so many years?
