Disventure Camp, Misogyny, and You is a meta essay by total-mkulia going over how Disventure Camp, a popular fanseries for the Total Drama fandom with its own characters and fandom, perpetuates misogynistic stereotypes within its own characters.
Intro
Hello I’m tumblr user total-mkulia and I've been enabled so I'd like to talk about the misogyny evident in Disventure Camp. My qualifications, if anyone cares, are that I'm a lesbian woman who's been done with men for YEARS.
I’d also like to recommend this google doc by tumblr user harzeke discussing racism in both the total drama show, Disventure Camp, and the td fandom in general. I will not say it inspired this because that is meticulously made and this is more of a rant, but when this got too long for a tumblr post (happened very quickly) the idea for a google doc came here (as did the idea for putting in pictures so people’s eyes don’t glaze over at all the text).
That being said, I truly hope my making of this doesn’t detract from what he’s discussing, as that is not my intention here. Intersectionality is real (and relevant here!) and we can care about more than one thing.
Some disclaimers:
- I like Disventure Camp, do not get me wrong. I think it had its ups and downs but overall I enjoyed it. And, much like in the doc above, I think it’s good if you support it! This is why I'm going to be so critical-- because I think it can do better and I would like it to.
- I am trying to be as unbiased as possible. Emphasis on trying. Additionally, I am criticizing the treatment of female characters, not the characters themselves, so don't take it personally if I criticize your fave. (If it makes you feel better, I am also criticizing my faves).
- I watched DC recently and am going off memory. Obviously I am not going to remember every little thing. Neither is the average watcher. If this really gets that serious maybe I'll rewatch it and edit further (but probably not). I am also using the wiki for pictures and to help with small details.
- I have not watched the original season one, Adventure Camp, because it’s not considered canon and I’m therefore going to treat it as irrelevant.
- I haven’t watched all the greetings either, I doubt most people do, I just fully trust whatever the wiki says about the ones that are relevant.
- "Oh but Total Drama did this thing to its female character--" this is a fan series. It's supposed to be better than Total Drama, a show which we all already know (I hope) has its problems.
- And finally, I understand the format of this show, I do. You need shallow characters or characters with shorter arcs and less screentime for a satisfying boot. I am aware not every character is going to have an arc, this is true for both male and female characters, but there is still misogyny present in those that do and don’t.
Now, let's go character by character, season by season (as they were made, and not as they are in the timeline), in (roughly, with a few divergences) elimination order.
