About

When Rikkai is introduced in Tennis no Oujisama, they are presented as the ultimate opponent; not only are they the reigning national champions for two years running, but they've dominated in the Kanto regional tournament for twenty years. They're led by a triumvirate of some of the most powerful players in Japanese junior tennis: the captain, Yukimura Seiichi, rumored to be extremely capable as a player, but who's strength hasn't been seen due to an illness that kept him hospitalized throughout the regional tournament; the vice-captain, Sanada Genichirou, a top-ranked and nearly unbeatable player known as the Emperor, and Yanagi Renji, who acts as Rikkai's strategist and is the foremost practitioner of data tennis in the series.

The Rikkai regulars are almost completely composed of third years; Kirihara Akaya, who plays a wild and violent brand of tennis, is the lone second year. The team's rounded out by the four players that composed their two doubles pairs: Marui Bunta, self-proclaimed genius volley specialist and Jackal Kuwahara, the half-Brazilian power player; and Niou Masaharu and Yagyuu Hiroshi, famous for pretending to be each other in their match against Kikumaru and Oishi.

Every single member of the club is just a little bit crazy; some of them more so than others. In almost any other club in the series, even the most normal member of Rikkai would be the slightly weird, slightly insane, brilliant player. All together, they're a force of nature that's just barely been leashed. It's this untamed craziness that makes me love them so much - they're ambitious, arrogant, talented nuts, and they fully embrace all aspects of their collective personality.
