In May 2006, Slodwick proposed a campaign [1] to send postcards to David Hewlett, the actor who plays Rodney McKay on Stargate Atlantis, inscribed only with the phrase "David Hewlett, how are you so awesome?" between May 29 and June 10, 2006.
Slodwick cites Martin Gero and "the Season One commentaries" for the origin of this phrase,[2] but evidence suggests it may have come from the commentary to the season two episode Duet where Gero says, "David Hewlett, how are you so awesome? The end."[3] Even though the season two DVD set was not released until March 6, 2007,[4] its commentary tracks were circulating the internet as early as May 9, 2006.[5]
Since the campaign, the phrase "How are you so awesome?" has gained popularity within and beyond SGA fandom (partly due to Fannish Osmosis) and is often invoked to describe anyone who is deemed awesome by the speaker, not just David Hewlett.
