In Harry Potter fanfiction, Dark!Harry is a shorthand for a type of AU in which Harry becomes a dark wizard and even in some cases a Dark Lord (see Dark Lord Potter). Generally these stories are based on the existing 'darker' traits in Harry's character such as his propensity to anger, distrust, and overconfidence, and his canonical use of dark magic such as the Cruciatus Curse as well as his troubled childhood at the Dursleys'.
In some stories Harry joins Voldemort while in others, he ruthlessly fights against Voldemort and the Death Eaters while being motivated by revenge or hunger for power. Manipulative!Dumbledore and Weasley Bashing are common tropes in Dark!Harry fanfics.
A significant percentage of Dark!Harry fanfiction is written by male authors, contrarily to the majority of fanfiction overall, and these stories tend to be especially popular with teenage and young adult male readers.
