Dare Me was a mystery/thriller/drama series inspired by Megan Abbott's novel of the same name. It followed the stories of a group of cheerleaders in small Midwestern town and the trouble they increasingly got caught up in following the arrival of a new coach.
Canon
When new cheerleading coach, Colette French, takes over coaching the high school squad, there is a shift in loyalties, disruptions in relationships, and increasing problems for the girls as they find themselves caught up in dark secrets and increasingly disturbing events.
The series was cancelled after a single season[1].
Fandom
Dare Me has a moderate fandom around it on Tumblr, where GIF sets and short meta are fairly common, and episode and show discussions took place on Reddit while the show was airing, though activity has tapered off considerably by 2023.
On Tumblr, a number of fans have drawn parallels between the relationships between characters and those from the show Yellowjackets, with both shows having storylines focused on teenage girls put into disturbing or traumatic situations and the impact it has. In particular, the friendship between Beth Cassidy and Addy Hanlon in Dare Me is compared to the friendship between Shauna Shipman and Jackie Taylor in Yellowjackets.
In fanwork spaces like Archive of Our Own, the fandom is relatively small, with 141 works as of December 2023 and a few works continuing to be created and updated in 2023. The fandom leans heavily towards sapphic pairings, with 135 of the works tagged as F/F.

- Angst and Unhealthy Relationships - A canonical aspect of the show, with a number of unhealthy or toxic relationships playing key roles in the story-lines, which is reflected in a reasonable number of fanworks.
Controversy
Some viewers felt that the show contained too many problematic aspects, including the inappropriate relationship of some sort between Coach Colette French and student Addy Hanlon, and the portrayal of body shaming and body image[2].
