Danny Phantom Day of Angst is an annual event held on October 1 to generate angsty material for the cartoon series Danny Phantom.

This event was created in 2008 and revived in 2012, coinciding with a renaissance era of the Danny Phantom fandom.

Note: despite the similarity in date and theme, there is no relation to the other Danny Phantom fandom event Going Angst Week.

Naming

Danny Phantom Day of Angst has also been referred to as International Danny Phantom Day of Angst, Angst Day, Angst Day [year], DP Angst Day, DP Angst Day [year], DP-angst Day, DPA Day, Danny Phantom Angst Day, angst fest, etc.

A common tag format on archiveofourown (ao3) is "Angst Day [year] (Danny Phantom)"[1]

History

Early Years

The first International Danny Phantom Day of Angst was held on October 1, 2008.

Author's notes on fanfiction.net (ffn) credit MoonlightUmbreon and Shining Zephyr for creating the event.[2]

The official DeviantArt group DP-Angst was founded and moderated by Shining-Zephyr and DreamhazeMaster.[3] As of October 9, 2023, there were still 197 members of the group.

At least twenty fics were posted to ffn for the first annual Danny Phantom Day of Angst.[4]

In the early years, this event was most active on ffn and DeviantArt.[5]

2012 Revival

Danny Phantom Day of Angst was revived in 2012 by sapphireswimming and dpsg1.

Since then, the event has largely been based in tumblr, ffn, and ao3.

Purpose

While the Danny Phantom Day of Angst has come to be a general celebration of the fandom's love of angst, the event was originally created with a more concrete purpose in mind.

In a 2019 tumblr thread, sugarandinkart recalled that it was created as a space for angst and darkfic in response to an influx of fluffy, romantic, and oc-based work in the fandom.[5]

The official DeviantArt group DP-Angst's About Us page says:

This event was set up in order to spread angst-type fanfictions that were seriously lacking on Fanfiction.net, and to help counter the continuous onslaught of Mary Sues found there. To show that those of us who still loved angst could hold our own. And, ultimately, to just have a lot of fun torturing characters. [6]

Guidelines

Danny Phantom Day of Angst does not have any official prompts, requirements, or tags. It is simply a day to collectively post and enjoy angsty things. All types of fanwork are welcome.
