Dís/Dwalin is a low-prevalence het relationship in The Hobbit movies fandom. It involves Princess Dís, younger sister to Thorin Oakenshield, and her distant cousin Dwalin, who was a member of Thorin's Company.

The relationship is probably not canonical, as Fíli and Kíli are not noted to be Dwalin's sons. However, Dís never appears directly in any text, so it's impossible to say what relationships she did or did not have, aside from those listed in her genealogy.[2] Works for this ship often reference Dís/Her Husband or make Dwalin the father of one or both of Dís's sons. Sometimes he even is her only husband.

Origins

Tropes

  • Pining and Unrequited Love - The relationship is often portrayed as Dwalin alone being in love, while Dís is in love with someone else. There's also often mutual pining, where position or worry about the children (or rules about remarriage) prevent them from being together. Or sometimes they're both just as bad at feelings as Thorin typically is.
  • BAMFs - Dís and Dwalin are often seen as equally matched in fighting ability and stubbornness. In some works, Dwalin is around Thorin's age and helps Dís learn to fight.
  • Self-Sacrificing Dís - Dís often chooses not to be with Dwalin because of her position and need to marry well, or due to a worry that she would cause problems for him if they were married.
  • Softie Dwalin - Dwalin is frequently shown as being very affectionate toward Fíli and Kíli, even watching out for them.
  • Jealousy - Dwalin is often jealous of Dís's husband, sometimes making terrible choices as a result.
  • Post-Quest for Erebor - In most works where they get together, it's after the reclamation of Erebor. This may be due to clinging to each other after losing Thorin, Fíli, and Kíli (with a sense of loss on both sides and guilt on Dwalin's), or it may be an everyone lives work where their respective family members try to play matchmaker to get them to finally admit to their feelings.
  • Childhood Friends - Since Dwalin in movie fandom is generally taken to be one of Thorin's closest friends growing up, Dís and Dwalin are often depicted as childhood friends (and even childhood sweethearts) before something prevents them from marrying.
