Canon

Fandom

Cinder is fairly unpopular in Rwby fandom and is subject to hate and bashing. This is partially due to her having killed and tormented a number of protagonists well-liked by the fandom. RWBYtube and other platforms have many analyses and meta about her that call her bad, not just as a person, but in how she is written. She tends to be more popular among fans who are particularly interested in the RWBY villains.

Common Tropes and Fanon

  • Backstory: Little is known about Cinder's background, so it is a fairly common topic to speculate on. Common questions are why she is so set on gaining power and how she came to ally with Salem. In early Volumes it was commonly theorized that she was a former student at Beacon or another Huntsman Academy, or that she had some other personal connection to Ozpin. Around the end of Volume 7, it was speculated that she came from Mantle or some other lower class background that made her jaded about the and obsessed with gaining power.
  • Name: Related to the questions about Cinder's backstory, it is suggested in canon that the surname "Fall" was a name Cinder chose for herself after setting her sights on gaining the Fall Maiden's power.
  • Grimm: In Volume 5 it was revealed that one of Cinder's arms had been replaced with/become Grimm, presumably by Salem's will. Little is understood about how this was possible or what the consequences of this could be. It is commonly speculated how this is connected to Salem's power and how it would be affected by the Maiden powers or the power of Ruby Rose's silver eyes. It is commonly theorized that the Grimm power will grow and take over more of Cinder's body.

Shipping

  • Cinder/Emerald Sustrai: Cinder's most common ship is with Emerald, based on their close relationship in canon and the loyalty Emerald shows her. However, canon generally suggests that Emerald misguidedly views Cinder as a mother figure, and that Cinder does not value her similarly.
  • Cinder/Ruby Rose and Cinder/Jaune Arc are two significant enemyslash ships, generally based on Cinder's personal vendetta against Ruby and her tormenting Jaune.
  • Cinder/Neo Politan: This ship became more popular after the two formed an alliance in Volume 6, but is still minor.
