Sir Christopher Lee (b. May 27, 1922) was an English actor, author, and singer with a very long and varied career. He is mostly known for playing villains such as Count Dracula and other villains in several Hammer Horror films in the 1960s-1970s, Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man, Francisco Scaramanga in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, Saruman in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Count Dooku in the Star Wars Prequels.
His death in 2015 was taken hard by many fans.
See Wikipedia for full details.
Christopher Lee was himself a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and was the only member of the Lord of the Rings cast to have met Tolkien personally. Fan legend has it that Tolkien gave Christopher Lee his blessing to play Gandalf should LotR ever be made into a movie, but the truth of that is disputed. (See this comment by fan squire on the TheOneRing.net boards.) He also admits to having intentionally taken other roles as wizards in order to prove himself to Peter Jackson when casting LotR.
