How many examples are wanted?

Hi there, can someone estimate about how many works it takes until this template would be removed? Is it about the variety as much as the count? Do you want at least one fanmix, vid, fic, art? Do you want 4-5 of each? Do you want at least 10 overall, no matter the category? I know people often wave their hand, and say maybe it depends, perhaps it's about what kind of content the fandom tends toward. But could you then specify: for a fandom where mostly fanart is made, try to have around 10 pieces. For fandoms that are prolific in graphics, art, mixes, etc. try to have three of each. And so on. Thanks! -JadedPrism (talk) 02:30, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

My personal rule of thumb is at least three example works for each medium category and include a variety of works, styles, and subject matter when possible. If there is only one category of fanwork on a page, I may bump it up to five or six. Anything more than six is probably not needed, as it may get long or unwieldy and we are not a directory of every fanwork to exist. If the fandom has a lot of fanworks documented in their own articles on Fanlore, I would use {{main category}} as a hatnote before listing a few examples. (There's no documentation on the template yet, but it's in action on the Undertale article if you would like an example.) If you want examples of how I've tackled example fanwork pages I've lead the charge on, see The Thing (1982), Fake Peppino, Custom Remix, and Mystery Flesh Pit National Park. I have been trying to follow this, so thank you! Additional question though! Can we do six links for fanart, and then a gallery? If so, is there a certain number of items that go in the gallery without causing people upset? -JadedPrism (talk) 02:31, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
There's no right or wrong answer about this. In my opinion, example fanwork pages on fandom pages don't need galleries. I try to keep galleries restricted to sections in the main body of an article that talk about visual trends, such as "Just cancel it" and the Akira bike slide on the Akira page, and deliberately messy handwriting and weird typing for Fake Peppino's dialogue. For galleries, I follow the same rule of thumb in terms of amount. Something also to consider/keep in mind is that more images on a page makes the page slower to load, especially if you're integrating a lot of images or large images. Thus, with galleries, I would lean more on minimums and resize images to be smaller before uploading. (I have a Photoshop script if you need help batch resizing images.)
