Callista Masana (also known as Callista Ming) is a Jedi Knight from the last decades of the Old Republic in the Star Wars Legends universe, best known for her brief relationship with Luke Skywalker. Created by author Barbara Hambly, her first appearance was in the 1995 novel Children of the Jedi.

A student of maverick Jedi master Djinn Altis, Callista sacrificed her life to stop the a Death Star prototype known as the Eye of Palpatine, from destroying the planet Belsavis. Her spirit remained in the ship's computer for the next three decades until she was awoken by Luke Skywalker, and the two fell in love as they sought to destroy the Eye from within. In the process, Luke's student Cray Mingla sacrificed herself, and offered Callista use of her body, which Callista accepted so she could stay with Luke. However, the transfer erased Callista's abilities to use the Force. Grieving over her loss, Callista eventually ended her relationship with Luke and went on a journey to find a new place in the galaxy, traveling under the name Callista Ming.

Role in Fanworks

Callista often appears as a romantic foil or rival to Mara Jade. Luke/Mara shippers were not fond of the character, and their fanworks focused primarily on Luke's emotional distress following Callista's departure, and/or Callista's later interference with the relationship that he develops with Mara in her absence. "Catfights" between the two over Luke were common enough that many fanfics would specifically include "no catfight" in their summaries. However, the animosity between the two ships never advanced to a full-blown ship war, due to Callista's relative lack of popularity among the fandom.

Other common storylines including Callista regaining her Force powers and returning to Luke and/or Luke searching for her and their subsequent reunion.

Fan Reactions

Callista was weird yeah but also the most memorable (except for Mara Jade) of the love interests... I mean, come on, they had a virtual romance. Does not get better.[1]

Actress Ashley Judd was a fancast for Callista in a small fandom poll in early 2000.[2]
