Brink! is a 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) starring late-90s heartthrob Erik Von Detton (So Weird, The Princess Diaries) as Andy "Brink" Brinker, a competitive rollerblader. The film itself is a Modern AU of Mary Mapes Dodge's 1865 novel Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates. The majority of fanworks for Brink! were either self-insert het fic pairing the author's stand-in character with Brink, or they were slash fics that paired Brink with the film's villain, Val Horrigan (played by Sam Horrigan). Many people consider Brink! to be the first "true" DCOM, although it was the third to be released by Disney Channel. The set-up of the film created the schema that most DCOMs would follow until 2006 with the release of High School Musical: two rivals compete in a sport or activity with minimal adult supervision and a tragedy or misunderstanding causes them to realize that they have more in common than they previously thought, leading to a moral victory of the hero and a redemption of the villain in the film's final act.

In Fandom

Brink! remains a very popular DCOM into 2021, even though it is a highly dated concept and contains very dated music and fashion. Nostalgia causes this film to rank highly on many fan-polls and in meta and essays about the history of DCOMs.

In 2012, ONTD ranked Brink! as the DCOM that most needed a (belated) sequel.[1] In 2012, Complex ranked the film at number 1 on the magazine's list of the 25 best Disney Channel Original Movies.[2] In December 2015, Dylan Kickham of Entertainment Weekly ranked Brink! at number four on a list of the top 30 DCOMs. Kickham wrote, "Along with the hilariously nostalgic lingo, Brink! earns its place in the pantheon of great DCOMs for mixing adrenaline, drama, and one-time Disney golden boy Erik von Detten."[3]

In March 2016, the film was ranked at number 37 on MTV's list of the best DCOMs, consisting of 99 films.[4] In May 2016, Aubrey Page of Collider ranked each Disney Channel Original Movie released up to that point. Page ranked Brink! at number 17, writing, "It's been official pretty much since it aired: Brink! is a classic. And, it's potentially the best aggressive inline skating movie ever been committed to film – though it might also be the only one."[5]
