Reactions and Reviews

I always look forward to reading this author’s stories because she has the unique ability to base them on plot lines that are normally not my cup of tea and yet somehow she manages not to just hold my attention enough to read them, but to actually enjoy them, as well. So when I started to read this story which does not fit into the above category, but, in fact, is based on one of my favorite plot devices, I figured if I enjoyed those stories well enough, I was in for a treat when it came to this one. And I am happy to say I was right.

As I mentioned, this story is based on one of my favorite plot devices – the old “what happened after the episode ended”. Here the episode is “Turnabout Intruder”. Kirk and Spock are not in a relationship, although it is clear Kirk’s thoughts are certainly turning in that direction. And while Spock seems oblivious to Kirk’s desires, others on the ship are not, as a matter-of-fact, there’s some indication they believe those desires have already been acted upon. One particular incident provides Kirk with a small hint, but he has little time to ponder it as he and Spock are ordered to Starbase 2. Apparently the doctors there are unsure as to her final disposition until Kirk and Spock provide them with further information, including the supposed “mental connection” between the two. Kirk assumes they’re talking about the mind meld Spock performed which led him to discover exactly what was going on, but how that is relevant as to the fate of Dr. Lester is somewhat of a mystery. A mystery that will have to wait to be solved until they reach the Starbase. After the two board a shuttlecraft and take the three day journey to the base, truths are revealed as to what may have happened if Janice had succeeded in her plans, truths that solidify the bond between them even more. But it is still one of friendship only, although both Kirk and Spock soon find out that others are convinced there is more than just friendship between them. Even more revealing, those “others” include one of the three doctors who question Kirk and Spock in order to determine Janice’s eventual fate. With his secret desire unwittingly exposed, Kirk finds himself having to decide whether it is worth taking the next step in their relationship, a step he isn’t sure Spock is willing to take.

As I mentioned before, this author has a tendency to write stories I normally wouldn’t bother to read and yet end up really enjoying them. So when I discovered she wrote one based on a plot line I really enjoy, I figured I was in for a treat and I was absolutely right. This story was an absolute joy to read and while it may not have had a lot of twist and turns, it certainly didn’t need any to captivate my interest and I am sure it won’t be needed to captivate yours.
