Bernice Summerfield, also known as Benny, is a recurring character from the Doctor Who Expanded Universe.
Canon
Bernice was introduced as new companion for the Seventh Doctor in the books that followed after the classic television series came to an end. For a character that never appeared on the TV series itself she still became popular with fans.
Bernice is an archaeologist from the 26th century. She travels with the Seventh Doctor for a considerable amount of time, and at later times meets other incarnations of the Doctor, from the First to the Twelfth. She is canonically bisexual.

Pairings
The majority of fanworks tend to focus on Bernice's friendships, most popularly with the Doctor and Ace McShane, whom she was close with canonically. There are some shipping fanworks, it is not uncommon to ship Bernice with The Doctor, although according to AO3 the most popular incarnation to ship Bernice with is the Eighth Doctor[1]. Bernice is also shipped with the Doctor's brother Braxiatel and her canonical ex-husband Jason Kane. There is very little femslash involving Bernice, although there is a very small amount of Ace/Bernice fanworks.
