Beetlejuice/Maitlands is the pairing of Beetlejuice and Barbara and Adam Maitland from Beetlejuice musical fandom.
Canon
Beetlejuice and the Maitland’s exists in both Movie and Musical Cannon. Adam and Barbara do not appear in the animated series.
Film
Adam and Barbara call upon Beetlejuice after being warned by their caseworker Juno to never say his name. When Barbara calls name, she and her husband are transported into Adam’s town model. They are forced to dig him up and soon decide that he is too much for them to handle. Beetlejuice, upon meeting them, instantly kisses Barbara and attempts to look up her skirt much to the annoyance of both husband and wife.
Beetlejuice offers to help them to get rid of the living but without a cooperative team effort, Beetlejuice takes matters into his own hands and haunts his own way. By the end of the film, it is Barbara Maitland who interrupts Beetlejuice's wedding to Lydia by making a Sandworm eat him.
Musical
Beetlejuice introduces the Maitland’s and how they are going to die. He is the first person they meet after they die and he takes the opportunity to manipulate the situation to make him look like their only option.
They have more of an interaction in this portion of the cannon and it is where the ship is most prevalent. This is due to how frequently Beetlejuice will crack sexual commentary to them and instead of kissing only Barbara as in the movie, he turns his attention to Adam as well.
In the end, Beetlejuice leaves the Maitland and Deetz family to enjoy their existence after he finally gets what he wants which is to become alive which he achieved after the youngest Deetz family member cons him into marriage.

Film
Currently, there is very little content with Beetlejuice, Adam, and Barbara in the film universe.
Musical
The musical is the primary spark for this ship. Many of the older fans consider Beetlands to be a reactionary ship to oppose Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz.
Currently, there is a wide variety of fan art and fan fiction for this pairing.
Ship Wars & Controversy
- 2019
- Introduction to Beetlelands - With an influx of new Musical Verse fans came a surge in Anti-shipper activity. This led to a split in the fandom between Beetlejuice/Lydia Shippers and the new Beetlejuice/Maitland Shippers. During the COVID -19 lockdowns the intensity of the Anti Ship War has forced many neutrals and multi shippers to go into hiding among one or both communities. Many of the Anti-shippers have a preference for Beetlejuice/Maitlands over any other ship.
- There is debate on whether the initial ship "GoldenRat" name is considered controversial and potentially antisemitic due to the usage of the term "rat" in regards to Beetlejuice. This was brought up after months of using the term before people realized it might be offensive to call the lead actor Alex Brightman (who happens to be Jewish) a rat.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
- Reunion - This is a common trope in all universes for all ships with Beetlejuice.
- Enemies to Lovers - There is a strong canonical dislike but there are fics that will encourage forgiveness and romance.
