Azalais is a fan author active in the Lord of the Rings fandom since 2002. Her fiction is set in the bookverse and usually focuses on Legolas and Gimli. Her works range from drabbles to epics and are known for weaving delicately around canonical events. She writes: I am also a tiresome canon geek when it comes to LoTR and love fic which gapfills, embroiders, or plays clever what-if AU games in order to make me think about the book afresh.[1]
She is a well-known member of the Henneth-Annûn Yahoo group and is also active on the Henneth Annûn Story Archive forums. She participates in the tolkien_weekly drabble livejournal community.
Azalais' stories are archived at fanfiction.net, Henneth Annûn Story Archive and Tolkien Fan Fiction.
Notable Works
- Amid the Powers and Chances of the World—novel-length attempt at a realistic Legomance which weaves in and out of the events of LotR. Winner in the Romance: Gondorians category of the Middle-Earth Fanfiction Awards 2011.[2] Altariel writes: Azalais has a strong, graceful, and elegant narrative style, and skilfully manages the inclusion of the details of her extensive research without information ever being given in a forced fashion.[3]
- An Unexpected Party—vignette featuring JRR Tolkien. Dwimordene writes: One always hesitates to write Tolkien himself as a character... but Azalais pulls it off. She also manages to incorporate, in slightly altered form, several lines or snippets of lines from the books as Tolkien's actual thoughts—and it works! It doesn't feel stale, although the nostalgia factor is certainly ratcheted up quite a bit, thanks to the context. The atmosphere is just wonderful.[4]
