Atlas is a very popular[1] Star Trek: Reboot novel by Angel Baby1. It is slow building Kirk/Spock slash, but Kirk-centric and quite long (~157k words). It also inspired fanart.

Summary

Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning."[2]

Recs and Reviews

"Slightly AU. Spock and Jim are soulmates in this slow building epic with angst out the wazoo. Her Jim is almost, but not quite, super!Jim and I love him to death in this fic. This is also one of my all time favorites, ever in the history of the universe."[3]

"Ho-ly crap. This fic is amazing. Totally, completely, and utterly amazing. When I finished reading this fic, I ended up lying in bed and thinking: “Holyshitholyshit that was freaking awesome.” It is dark and angsty at many times, and although I’ll be the first to fight for the side of fluff, this definitely is one of my favorite fics of all time. This story is a brilliant character study of Kirk, first establishing who he is in “Discovering Atlas”, and then going on in the next three parts to slowly reveal all the different events that came together to make the incredible Captain James Tiberius Kirk. It is told primarily from Spock’s point of view, although at some points, it does dart off to another character’s perspective for a few paragraphs. This story spoke really personally to me, and it definitely moved me, very nearly to tears a few times. The comparison of Kirk to Atlas was heart-wrenching, but accurate, and just wow."[4]

"Because it’s epic and entertaining and a truly thrilling read that I was completely charmed by. It’s actually one of the first fics I read for the new movie. Just an outstanding job on the character of Kirk."[5]

I highly recommend for everyone who likes 'Spirk'. It's very well written and quite captivating. One of those 'can't put down' stories![6]

I just like how its slow building but it fills in the blanks on Jims past and shows how awesome he is!!!! there needs to be more genius!Jim fics out there in the world...one where its slow building K/s and him having a past on Taurus 5[6]

The author does a flawless job of making Kirk a worthy Captain (and more) to the Enterprise. It’s slowbuild and perfect and JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU READ ABOUT THE BABY VULCAN WHO LIKES JIM OMG[7]

K/S A nice take on what happened after the Enterprise returned to Earth.[8]

This is a massive, plotty fic that you’ll love if you’re a fan of genius!Jim (and who isn't?). I’m massively impressed by the scope of the author—Angel Baby1’s—vision. A fic like this would only really work if told from another POV (in this case, an expertly-penned Spock), because you’d probably think Jim was a little too good to be true otherwise.[9]

Flail. Seriously. This is just to epic to really comment on coherently. It’s beautiful and EPIC, like if you looked up Epic in the dictionary this fic would be there. I love the slow build up of the relationship between Spock and Kirk so that when it does come about it has a great strong foundation and you feel like the wait has been worth it. Just read. Please.[10]

So so so deliciously slow-building. And intense. I cannot get enough of this D: There are story arcs. Do you know what that does to me? Story arcs![11]

this isn’t a fic, it’s an experience. this is epic and intense, and thoroughly enjoyable.[12]

absolutely wonderful fic that immediately follows the events of the reboot - and dear god it blew away anything and everything I thought I knew about slow burn! A must read for those of you in the Star Trek fandom who enjoy some Spirky goodness![13]

There’s a lot of good I can say about this fic! The pacing is really well done. Nothing is too drawn out; One of my personal pet peeves in fanfiction is when the action is drawn out for chapters. But this fic does a really good job of bringing up important points, giving them their space, but moving on just as quickly. In addition, Atlas does a great job of bringing up mystery and intrigue in the beginning chapters (see: Alfie, Jim’s particularity with food, and so on) and paying it off later on. (The Dogs of War, and Tarsus IV respectively…)

I also appreciated the exploration of Jim and Spock’s relationship. It was clear that they valued one another immensely even before throwing romantic feelings into the mix. Overall, the development came naturally, it wasn’t overly sexual. At the same time Atlas wasn’t solely a get-together fic, we see glimpses of their relationship as it functioned day-to-day. In addition, the feelingsy stuff didn’t overshadow the plot and vice versa. It was balanced well.

Kirk’s relationship with his crew was also a highlight of the fic. Bones and Jim have an easy familiarity and trust that make it obvious where they stand in each other’s lives. Also, Bones and Uhura and everyone else are so dedicated to Jim and to their friendship. It’s a gem that doesn’t get explored enough in fanfiction.

As for criticisms of the fic, I don’t have much. The switching of point of view gets confusing at times, or else it would be interesting to explore the story entirely from one point of view— for example, when Jim is kidnapped and forced to run Peter’s trial being entirely from Spock’s point of view. Less engaging, maybe, but an exercise in Spock under pressure.

More! Uhura! She had some gems and she was an important but more minor character, but honestly every fic needs more Uhura.[14]

Atlas is KILLING MEEEE OMG THIS FIC, it goes from lulling you into a sense of calm (smiles and happiness all around. What ever could go wrong aye?) To Red Alert! RED ALERT! This is not a drill. I repeat. NOT. A. DRILL. (Mayday mayday. We are under sudden unexpected attack!!!)[15]
