Andre The Giant Has A Posse is a meme created by Shepard Fairey in 1989 while experimenting with stencils and based on a newspaper advertisement for a World Wrestling Federation event featuring professional wrestler Andre the Giant. The initial phenomenon predates general public Internet access and modern meme culture. People would place stickers with the image wherever they could. The Rhode Island skateboarding community were the first to promote it.[1]
The WWF tried to stop it due to trademark issues, causing the image to be modified into the "Obey Giant" meme.[1] Many years later, the rise of the Internet spawned many imitations and parodies.
