Reactions and Reviews
1990
These two stories together are an excellent study of the differences in the bonds between our Kirk and Spock and those of the mirror universe. Poor Spock, forced to stand by helplessly while his beloved Kirk was being taken by the mirror Spock. I liked the part after our Kirk returns to his own universe and K & S ask each other for forgiveness even though both are blameless. The mirror Kirk was an interesting character, unable to admit his love for his own Spock but nevertheless jealous because Spock had mated with the other Kirk. Hope to see more from this author in the future. [1]
This is a sequel to BRIGHTLY AS A KING, and I really didn't see the necessity of it. It takes place almost entirely in the "mirror" universe. Essentially, the story is a "rape Kirk" story. The obnoxious "mirror" Kirk gets his, after mocking his bondmate and putting him through the agonizer. I couldn't emphasize with either character; they both are quite cruel. I don't really like stories where Spock rapes Kirk (or vice versa) unless there is some compelling plot complication. I didn't find such a complication here, and it seemed simply another excuse for a high-handed Kirk to be punished by having his partner sexually humiliate him. [2]
