A Twist in the Logic is a Kirk/Spock story by Alice Hooker.

It was published in Charisma #18 and Kismet.

Summary

"Spock is slipped a dose of the Venus drug and uses the opportunity to go after Kirk and instigate the relationship they both have been wanting."

Reactions and Reviews

1993

This is from an old Trekker but new K/Ser. It's good and I hope she does more. At over 20 pages, it's an impressive effort. [1]

1994

A delightful and very inventive idea as Spock gets hold of a "Venus drug".

Good descriptive beginning as Spock indulges and wars with his imagination about Kirk. "His captain - Jim - sprawled naked on some alien, golden beach, a warm sea surging around his ankles as he stretched his bronzed-muscled body, gleaming, glistening in the huge sun." Pretty good imagination, huh?

Very clever scene as McCoy comes in to nag, cajole and generally pontificate to Spock on why he should go join Kirk for shore leave. I loved this exit line: "And the good doctor left amid muttered oaths and mumbled acerbic comments on Vulcans and life in general."

Very intriguing set-up as we watch Spock wake up from a sleep to be, how shall I say? More Vulcan? More man? His response was perfect: report it and go to sickbay! But now he's wild and free, so guess where he goes!

Spock estimates the drug will be in his system "seventeen point three four hours" and he takes advantage of it. Marvelous ruminations as he watches Kirk ride a horse naked on a beach. (That's Kirk, not the horse.) And quite sexy as Spock relieves his "needful erection" by himself.

Some difficult things: Kirk sticking his tongue out at Spock. What's a "moreso - will person"? Kirk's flight out the bathroom window and into the night because of Spock's condition was just too much and his ensuing thoughts didn't justify this response. Then "when Spock was put to rights"? Okay, okay- this time Kirk doesn't go into "a fit of giggles", he just thinks it.

And lastly, I felt it was unnecessary to put in that little "caveat" at the end about the Venus drug as it altered the mood of the story somewhat.

But I enjoyed the character of Admiral ("semi-retired") Malloy. He was funny and quite horny and provided a very good observer. This was great: "Malloy emerged from his room simply oozing bonhomie."

Some wonderful Spockian touches as when he nerve-pinches Kirk and when Kirk wakes up, he says that Spock could have waited. Spock responds with: " 'I did. For perhaps two point one five hours, and perhaps all my life.'"

P.D.S. (Pretty Damn Sexy) when "Without abandoning the snug haven, Spock hauled the human onto his knees. A brief caress across flushed temples, and they were joined in mind and body, becoming at once possessor and possessed. And this was only the beginning.

Wonderfully dramatic and romantic as they finally declare their love for each other.[2]

I reread this story recently because I have always remembered one scene in it where Spock watches a nude Kirk ride a horse bareback on a beach.

The story centers around Spock taking a “Venus drug” (as the footnote says, inspired by the Venus drug of “Mudd’s Women”) and wakes up more man than he’s ever been before...quite the image! And I just loved his response to the effects—he thinks he ought to report it and go to sickbay!

I loved Spock’s imaginings: “His captain... Jim...sprawled naked on some alien, golden beach, a warm sea surging around his ankles as he stretched his bronzed-muscled body, gleaming, glistening in the huge sun. Lapping now around lightly haired, tanned thighs, the well-formed sex. Touching. Kissing. Almost a caress....”

Really good scene where McCoy interrupts Spock’s musings to convince him to join Kirk on shore leave. He tells Spock that he and Kirk are both lonely and they should admit it. After the doctor leaves, Spock gets a fruit drink and it tastes bitter. I loved: “Mouthing colorful, ancient Vulcan oaths and expletives, he flung the glass against a bulkhead. It rebounded to crash down onto the deck with a less than satisfying thump. Of course, it was unbreakable.” Lots of terrific detail like that in this story, but the absolute best was when Spock wakes up from a drugged sleep to find himself “Super-Vulcan”!

It was so cool—he became really buff, his lips were fuller, “more lush, curling black hair covered bulging pectorals”—what a great picture! He figures out that his fruit drink was laced with the Venus drug and the best effect was that he felt all wild and free and wanted to go see Kirk right away.

Here’s where that scene of Kirk riding the horse on the beach comes in. What a great scene—muscled flanks, smooth flesh glistening, things like that. Later Kirk inquires if Spock has been working out and Spock replies: “I assure you, Jim, that it is indeed all me beneath this robe”. And then he has to take care of “a very needful erection” before he goes back into the cabin.

They have dinner together and afterwards Spock wants Saurian Brandy. Kirk keeps trying to see beneath Spock’s black robe because the Vulcan is so much more...Vulcan and Kirk is intrigued, but nervous. Then Kirk locks himself in the bathroom and won’t come out until Spock like, calms down. He ends up climbing out the window and Spock confronts him outside until Kirk takes off naked into the night. I just loved all this! Especially: “Spock’s blood was pounding wildly through his body, delighted that Jim was putting up such a spirited fight, a worthy opponent indeed, and how much sweeter the victory would be for them both when the battle was finally ended. Issuing a piercing, feral cry, the Vulcan took off into the night. The hunt was on.”

Kirk runs down the beach under the moonlight, all naked, and finds his way to a large beach house. He goes inside and meets admiral Malloy who’s real gay and real happy to see Kirk. What a terrific character—and, of course, Kirk just must spend the night at his house.

Spock shows up and Malloy is so happy. “Another visitor? My, my, we are popular tonight. Let’s see if this one is clothed.” But then he realizes that something is going on between Kirk and Spock, so he gracefully retreats. I loved: “Malloy emerged from his room simply oozing bonhomie.”

Very romantic when they realize their love for each other and go horseback riding together on the beach.

This is one of those wonderful stories that I’m so glad I reread. I enjoyed it even more the second time. [3]
