Reactions and Reviews
I must say at this point that I am more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of stories in this 25 year old zine that has been untouched since it found its way to my house several years ago. Alright, so this is only the second story I‘ve read, but let me tell you about it.First of all, it‘s written by a name very familiar to me and much admired. Alayne is one of the stalwarts of K/S. Here she has penned a very interesting tale of time travel (but not the sort that scrambles your brain trying to comprehend it). It‘s a very easy to read story with a new character who‘s appealing to say the least. Kirk and Spock have been summoned by the Guardian to go and retrieve someone from another time and bring him or her back to the present. They don‘t know who, they don‘t know when, but they have little choice in the matter. They arrive in a rural area with a rough landing that injures Spock‘s leg and are quickly found by a young woman wielding a bow and arrow. Incongruous as it seems, Nyrah accepts them as friendly and takes them to her home, where she proceeds to make them as comfortable as she can. Kirk and Spock are at their best here, friends with matched curiosity and wit, who manage to fit in quite nicely with their hostess. Guess what she does for a living? She‘s a professional adventure/romance writer, but in her spare time writes science fiction. She seems strangely accepting of Kirk and Spock, even when she learns they are from ―another place‖. She senses that doesn‘t mean just over the hill. The reason for her ready belief in them is revealed when she asks her guests to read her sci-fi. The two are amazed when they realize she is essentially writing about them and their century, with their ship, their technological advances and even their friend Bones – all with different names, of course.
There‘s a very nice key to link the past (1992) and future that‘s inventing on the part of the author, I think. Oh, and did I mention the main difference in the real Kirk and Spock and Nyrah‘s ―fiction‖ is that her main characters are lovers? Ah! You might imagine the conversation this prompts and the way their imagination kicks in at the prospect. It‘s a gentle, loving story with no real issues to explore and no misunderstandings. It flows smoothly down its path, taking the reader along for a pleasant journey. Kind of like floating the river on a lazy summer afternoon.[1]
