A Thought in the Dark is a Kirk/Spock story by Jamie Erin Mason.

It was published in the print zine First Time #29.

Summary

"Through their link, Spock reads Kirkʼs desire to be dominated and so goes to his room to oblige him."

Excerpt

"Kirk tosses and turned restlessly. Unbidden, the day's events returned to his mind. Spock's long fingers closing on the enemy's shoulders in a painful pinch that had the being screaming before it had mercifully fainted; Spock's powerful grip locking on a monstrous creature's neck and then severing it with an audible crack, accompanied by the grotesque grimace of agony. Why did his mind play these episodes again and again? Every time his mind's eye saw them, he grew increasingly fascinated, like a voyeur watching someone else's private eroticism."

Reactions and Reviews

1991

I enjoyed the name of the author, Jamie Erin, far more than I did this short-short story. It was a sadistic type story that wasn't sadistic enough to be interesting or loving enough to be enjoyable. I see no reason for this story to have been written. [1]

I thought this vignette read more like an established relationship and/or mirror story than a first timer. The writing was smooth and clear, though I did find it difficult to imagine Spock so confident and willing to play the sadist in the S&M game, link or no link. I simply view him as more gentle and unsure. In any case, I personally would have preferred them to be together longer before they played adult 'games'. I must say, however, that for as short as this was, it was rather... er, erotic. [2]

1992

I normally don't like s/m stories. But this story is an exception to my rule. I'm not sure why. I think the reason is that it all seemed like a game, perhaps a dangerous game, but a game nevertheless. The story stopped short before the real hot stuff would have started.

I'm not sure if in reality Kirk and Spock would begin their relationship with such a game. Perhaps it would more likely be played in an established relationship. But this is only an unimportant quibble of mine. I liked the thrilling and erotical aspect of this story. [3]

Weird but interesting look at S-M. I felt Kirk was believable, Spock not.[4]
