Reactions and Reviews

1980

By contrast [to another story in this zine], the other major story, ‘A Sense of Duty,’ in which Starsky sacrifices (plot point here) for Hutch, fails. First person point of view stories are hard to do right. It’s hard to blend the character’s internal dialog with the necessary narrative. [1]

‘A Sense of Duty,’... did not have characters that rang quite true enough – Hutch was using distinctly un-Hutchlike phrasing, Nick switched gears from amiable ne’er do well to resentful thug, and Starsky – Starsky would have been a good enough shot to knock the gun out of Nick’s hand; he wouldn’t have dismissed his duty – or his guilt—with a ‘sorry, Ma, I shot the kid,’ phone call. The series’ characters had little enough in the way of established family; I didn’t feel that this story justified itself in eliminating Nick. [2]

LA VESPERS? Talk about a blast from the past! What a wonderful set of zines! I especially enjoyed Teri W's kill-Nicky story in that one, the one where Starsk had to chose between his brother and Hutch! Talk about angst done with style!...

These zines are definite must reads for any fan, so good you don't even miss the sex! [3]

If Starsky had to chose between Hutch and Nick, who do you think he would choose? :) [4]
