Recs and Reviews
C.M.Decarnin has moved over to X-Files. Not even the participants are sure about consent in A Boy And His Rat.[1]
A very intensely graphic series, full of hot-as-hell sex, extreme emotional subjugation, lust and madness. Some parts are just run-on PWP, sex and more sex, but since the sex is so hot and Mulder is fucking everything in and out of Krycek, you should love this as many M/Kers have read and relished this dynamic lust/love driven series ^_^[2]
I don't even know how to describe this series of stories. They are so incredibly intense they just left me with my jaw hanging open. Wow! Is the only thing I can say about them. I found them at a time when I thought I had read everything M/K and I just loved them. The writing is wonderful and just so emotionally intense and rich it sucks you in. Really just a series of PWP, but they are so much more than that. Alot of warnings, but I haven't seen them yet. It is a WIP series though...so?[3]
A Boy and his Rat by C. M. Decarnin which is in 16 unlinked parts! Go to her page to get all the links. It's a fascinating story, but terribly angsty and violent in parts. In many ways I like the Krycek she draws, although it is her Mulder that I am drawn to the most.[4]
Warnings: There are like a ton of warnings listed, including death, but the story is up to like part eleven and I haven't seen hide nor hair of any of them. So I don't know what is going on, I think it is still a WIP, maybe we have yet to get to them. Just check out the warnings, but I haven't found any of them in the story yet. *The story is finished and the warnings were bullshit. I don't think even one of them happened. So if they make you nervous, just forget about them. They don't happen.*This is one of those stories that you just go Wow! when you read it. It is sort of a long PWP, as the author states and I agree. All I can really say is Wow!, I'm like stuck on that. The story stunned me, it's well written and just shocks the hell out of you with how good it really is. I just stumbled on the thing one day, when I discovered Zen & Nancy's Homeless shelter. I thought I had read everything there was M/K at that point; good, bad, and indifferent. Then I came upon this and was amazed I had never read it. A few days later on one of the lists I am on someone else sent out a message strongly recommending this story and telling people how great it was too. I concurred as vehemently as possible and told everyone I agreed that they should read it. This is one of those rare finds you didn't even know was out there, but when you find it you are really glad you did. [...]
Note: This story has finally reached it's conclusion. I tried to read the last few parts (13-16), but found them confusing. I wasn't sure what was going on. Also some of the situations just didn't gel with me. Didn't think that was in the realm of what some of the characters would do. Just my opinion. I think the series hit it's high point with part 11.[5]
I'm sure it's been around a while, but it's worth it. This is Mulder/Krycek at one end of a very interesting spectrum, and it's fast paced, and it's thorough. I've got a few problems-- but despite them, I've still come away feeling dry-mouthed and shaken in a very good way. There's a startling, remarkable attention to detail in parts of this, where you're *right* there with them. And look out for a couple of highly powerful lines.[6]
The characterization is vivid and the story is solid. Sharp yet heartfelt, and reads like it's real. Poor Alex, having all his guts laid out under the burning sun. He'd explained why he had to leave. He'd told Kolya he had to be a man now and not cry. When the moment came it was the hardest thing he'd ever done, leaning in like a grownup and kissing Kolya's soft cheek, then smiling, as he said, "Good luck, comrade."[7]
Given the canonical relationship between Mulder and Krycek, it's hardly surprising that violence and abuse are common components in M/K slash. A Boy and His Rat is a fic which delves deep into these dark aspects of the pairing, while being at the same time a beautiful, even romantic, love story. It takes the on-screen Mulder who never thinks twice about beating Alex up even when he's in handcuffs, and lets us look inside his mind as he comes to discover what those impulses really say about him, sexually and emotionally. And it gives us a Krycek who worships his G-man with a near religious fervour, willing and eager to sacrifice everything he is - everything that remains of him after a life-time of horrors - on the altar of his love. It's a tale of two men so damaged by life that there is nothing normal left about the way they seek love, but who nevertheless discover that they can love, and perhaps be loved back, with a depth and a passion they didn't know themselves capable of. This is a long story, but the further you get into it, the more moving it becomes, and the better the writing is, so make sure you stick with it till the end. For me, this is one of those reads which are utterly, devastatingly mesmerizing while you are in the middle of them, and which stay with you long after the final sentence is over. As an example of Mulder/Krycek fic, it illustrates the intermingling of violence and passion, love and hate which for many people lies at the core of this fandom, but it does so in a way uniquely its own, stretching the borders of the characters while keeping them true to themselves. It remains one of the greatest, and most disturbed, love stories I've ever read.[8]
*A boy and his rat* by C.M. Decarnin is one of the best new finds in the M/K fandom. Many of the stories carry and NC-17 rating for m/m sex. Not all, but most. The damn thing is so good it just left me stunned the first time I read it. It is really just a series of PWP's, but it is so much more than that. The only way I can describe it is Wow, I am still stuck on that. It has been months and still I can only just say Wow. She posted a new part to it just last month and it was just so wonderful and powerful I couldn't believe it. The series has such wonderful imagery and excellent writing you can't believe you are reading just some PWP's, they are to rich to just be that. I highly recommend these stories over just about everything M/K, they are must read.
Note: There are alot of warnings listed in part 1, but we are up to part 11 and I haven't seen hide nor hair of them. Honestly, no trying to mess with you. It is a WIP, so they might show up eventually, but they haven't yet and it is pretty far along. Don't know if it was a joke all those warnings or if they will pop up someday....
I am sure you will enjoy them.[9]
