Femmefest, or the Harry Potter Spring Femmeslash Exchange Fest,[1] is an annual Harry Potter gift exchange for femslash-centric fic and art. The fest is currently run by bluemermaid.

Rules

Participants must be at least 18 years old and have a non-empty LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, or InsaneJournal older than one month as of the fest's sign-up date.[2][3] Additionally, participants must comment on the gift they receive at some point during the fest or will not be permitted to participate in the future.

As an anonymous gift exchange, participants are not allowed to reveal which gift they created (or post their work elsewhere) until all artists and authors are revealed at the end of the fest. Participants are assigned to one another based on the preferences (pairings, squicks, etc.) they submit when they sign up.

All fest submissions must portray a femslash relationship in which the main characters identify as female. Threesomes and other poly ships are permitted as long as all participants identify as female. Het and slash are allowed as secondary pairings. Works may not feature any sexual activity involving characters under the age of 15.

All fanfiction must be 1,500 words or longer, and may only be PWP if requested by the gift's recipient. Artists are expected to dedicate "quality time" to their piece. Stories are required to be beta-read and both fic and art may be rejected for poor quality.[2]

2009 Fest

The first Femmefest was run by arobynsung and tristesses. All gifts for this round were posted to LiveJournal and backed up on InsaneJournal.

As of 2013, this first round yielded more fanworks than any subsequent Femmefest, with 39 pieces of fanfiction and five pieces of fanart for a total of 44 gifts. The most popular pairings for the fest were Hermione/Pansy and Ginny/Pansy, each of which were featured in six works, and Hermione/Padma (featured in two works) was named a "surprise favorite". Hermione Granger and Pansy Parkinson were also the most popular characters, starring in 15 and 14 works respectively, while Padma Patil and Minerva McGonagall were the "surprise favorites".[4]

Recs for the round were collected for posting at the Daily Snitch newsletter community.[5]

2010 Fest

The 2010 Femmefest was again run by arobynsung and tristesses. The InsaneJournal mirror was not used for this round (or any subsequent ones), and was instead replaced by a Dreamwidth community. It was the only round to feature a "Guess the Artist/Author" poll.[6]

There were five pieces of fanart and 33 fics created for this round, for a total of 38 fanworks. The most popular pairing was Ginny/Pansy, featured in six works, and the most popular characters were Ginny with 13 works, Hermione and Pansy with 10 works each, and Minerva McGonagall with seven works.

Recs for the round were once again collected for posting at the Daily Snitch.[7]

2011 Fest

arobynsung and tristesses continued to run Femmefest through its third round. The mods had considered moving the fest to be run solely on the Archive of Our Own but, after hearing input from potential participants, decided to keep it at LiveJournal with a Dreamwidth mirror.[8][9] An AO3 collection was made available for participants to add their submissions from any past or future Femmefest.

There were 26 gifts created for the 2011 round, three of which are fanart and 23 are fanfiction. The most popular pairing was once again Ginny/Pansy, with four works, and the most popular characters were Hermione and Ginny, featured in nine works each.

2012 Fest

In mid-January 2012, arobynsung and tristesses announced that they would be too busy to continue running the fest and were looking to turn the community over to a new owner. bluemermaid became the new fest moderator and Femmefest 2012 began later that month.[10][11]

Like the previous round, gifts were posted to both LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, plus the option of adding one's submission to the fest's AO3 collection. The fest started with 29 participants but three dropped out, and three pinch hitters filled in for them. As such, a total of 29 gifts were created for the fest, three fanart and 26 fanfiction. The most popular pairing for the round was Hermione/Luna with four works; the most popular character was Hermione Granger, featured in eight works, followed by Pansy Parkinson and Luna Lovegood with seven works each, and Lily Evans with five works.
