Yume Nikki is an adventure game released in 2004 by pseudonymous Japanese developer Kikiyama. Players control a shut-in (referred to as the Japanese term hikkokomori) girl named Madotsuki and explore her dreams, which feature surreal horror-esque elements, to collect twenty-four different effects that change her appearance and equipment. The game by itself lacks an actual plot, and gameplay mainly focuses on exploration of said dream world. It has been cited as a major point of inspiration for later indie RPG games of similar veins, with LISA the Painful, OFF, Omori, and Undertale being the most prominent of them.
