I liked the authors' handling of mystical and religious matters very much. It's clear that they've done a great deal of work in developing Vulcan theology. The fact that Spock took time to return from trance shows that meditation is another plane of reality. The negativity that surfaces from their minds being magnified by the firepot shows the power of thought forms. The sacredness of sex, a favorite theme of mine, was also central to this story. This was demonstrated effectively through the concept of Spock being possessed by divine energies during sex. This can be understood symbolically for those who don't accept such beliefs. [1]
