Wishbabies are a fic trope in which babies are "born" from someone wishing for them, either consciously or subconsciously. beatrice_otter defines the trope as a plot where babies don't come from sex and growing inside a human, but by being wished for. If you and your partner wish for a baby, one appears floating down out of the sky in a little basket with the parents' names on it.[1]

This has the effect of either bringing the main pairing together (if they were not already a couple) through caring for the baby, or forcing an already–together couple to confront their repressed desires for family and domesticity.

Fans who don't like kidfic might connect with this trope though:

General DNWs: […] Not big on kidfic/babies in general (exception: wishbabies).[2]

Apparently the trope originated in the Hockey RPF fandom in January 2014 with the Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin's fanfic "lives to live through"[1] by oflights, which brought the general concept of wishbabies and paved the way for its expansion in the following months, with other works inspired/based/influenced by it.

So...when I first started reading about the concept of wishbabies, I was pretty skeptical. But now I kinda love the possibilities. I mean, mainly, I just kinda really want to write a fic about Obi-Wan having a wishbaby with Anakin :p[3]

In May 2019, a challenge in Spanish titled "Reto Especial Wishbabies" aka. "Wishbabies De Motín Fanficker" by Wattpad's group Motín Fanficker, inspired on a request from user chryoskane in honor of Mother's Day.
