Summary
"Kirk is missing on a distant mining planet; the only evidence he's left behind is a pile of clothes (Captain's uniform) beside a turbulent river."
From the Author
What I remember about this is an editor taking out an ill Kirk coughing up phlegm. “Gross,” she said. Well… yeah. [1]
Reactions and Reviews
So they still have colds in the 23rd Century! I can believe it, I guess. Kirk's being hidden and Spock's finding him was also quite believable. But the way they decide to become lovers is a little too cerebral for my taste— to much talking. On the other hand, the slow, non-sexual beginning to the expanded relationship is handled very nicely. [2]
The bit about the underwear was great - funny, true (sigh), and such a "common" touch! Kirk's imprisonment - just being left, all cold and naked and chained up-showed more callousness on the part of the miners than if they had actively tortured him. And he ends up with a cold of all things! The part where Kirk was telling Spock what he'd been afraid of when the miners insisted he undress was what most anyone would think - and I appreciated very much that the obvious conclusion is not what happened. Kirk and Spock's realization-of-love conversation was very gentle and loving, and I really liked the ending - that though sex was yet to come, simple physical closeness show love, too. [3]
