Reactions and Reviews

1985

When I Was Seventeen by Jo Scott-Ross (11 pages) concerns Spock's relationship, as a 17 year old runaway, with a rather reprehensible (but likable) human named Thomas O'Shannessy. The young Spock portrayed here is engaging & believable. His misadventures with Thomas, aboard the LocoMotion, are eminently enjoyable & cast an amusing light on the grown-up Spock (Kirk's bondmate) who briefly appears at the end of the story where he is about to explain to Kirk (I wish I could hear this one) why he is a 'wanted man' on Sigma IV. Again, those who want their K/S to focus primarily on the relationship between Kirk & Spock may be disappointed. [1]

1986

"When I Was Seventeen" by Jo Scott-Ross details another adventure with 17 year-old Spock and Thomas O' Shannessy. Well-written, this story even has a moral at the end. Not K/S, but definitely adult. [2]

The clever humor of "When I Was Seventeen," by Jo Scott-Ross, offsets some of the more emotionally sobering stories. A 17-year-old Spock shares life with a rascal of a human. A great writer uses wonderful images to show us a very endearing Spock. You'll want to know why Spock and his friends have to escape the authorities. [3]

1993

I've noticed some new subscribers to TLC in the last few months, so this review is mainly for them.

This is one of a series of stories about a very young Spock and his adventures with one Thomas O'Shannessy, pirate and rogue. O'Shannessy is truly one of the most original and endearing characters in all of K/S lit, and once you have made his acquaintance, you will not soon forget him.

In this story, Thomas has taken Spock to a junk shop in search of bargains. The jaunt will have unfortunate repercussions in Spock's later life and cause some problems for his future bondmate.

The seventeen year old of the title is, of course, Spock, but not our cool collected first officer, yet I have no trouble seeing the person he will become in this troubled run away. This Spock is all elbows and knees and other body parts that get in his way. Anyone who has ever had an adolescent around the house, or ever been one, will relate to this awkward phase that only seems funny in retrospect.

One sample:

"May I please look around?" Spock asked as he began to stand. He brushed the dust from his knees, then straightened.
Thomas looked up. "Yeah, just be careful. You remember what happened on Tlitilius IV."
Spock winced at the reminder. Tlitilius IV was known for its fine porcelain. Spock never wanted to go there again. "I will." Spock backed away. He promptly bumped into a stack of pottery jugs, for Stanlocious 9.
"Shit!" Thomas cursed as he jumped up and grabbed the pivotal jug just in time to keep the entire stack from crashing to the floor. "Over there," Thomas motioned with his head, "are all the stone carvings and unbreakable stuff..."

Funny and sweet by turns, there are also some deeply touching moments as Thomas contemplates forcing Spock to leave him for the boy's own good.

Track this story down! You won't be sorry. [4]
