From the Editorial

When I was younger, I loved to write. Finding just the right word to make a phrase sound good was immensely satisfying to me. But writing takes time and requires that the writer absorb themself into the world of their story and the lives of their characters. So my writing fell by the wayside as the other activities of my life (raising three kids, running a household as a single parent, and working a full time and a part time job) became more demanding. Then I found myself 30 years later with three kids in college and I pleased ... and I pleased the outcome of my summer, a summer to myself, to do as to write. it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

This little story is and I hope you enjoy reading I tried to stay within the confines of the story as presented to us throughout all three seasons, even though I was devastated by Catherine's death and wished it hadn't happened. I set my story five years after her death in order to give Vincent time to heal. I know that Vincent will always love Catherine, but I also know that a heart like his, with so much to give, will in time come to love again. Such is the nature of life.

I want to thank everyone associated with the Beauty and the Beast series for giving us this wonderful, inspirational program and especially the character of Vincent, who has opened up such infinite possibilities. This story is only one possibility as to the who, what, where and why of his existence and also to the mystery of his world. Perhaps next summer I'll write another story about a different possibility for, as Catherine and Vincent have taught us, all things are possible.

Excerpts

"What is it, Father?" Alarmed by the physican's [sic] outburst, Vincent rushed to his side and looked down at the still, pale face framed by the flowing, pink hair, and he saw that she was exquisitely beautiful and not a girl, but a woman.

Her face was somewhat enlongated [sic] and thin, with high cheekbones, and a perky turned up nose. Her ears protuding [sic] from the silky cascade of hair were slightly pointed at the tips. Her mouth was full, and long lashes layover the closed, slightly slanted eyes. On her forehead hung a transparent blue stone suspended from a slim, golden band that encircled her head.

"Look, Vincent", Father said shakenly. "See the gold band ... it's embedded in her skull ... here and again here on the other side".

She also noticed that [Vincent] dressed like the others in a shirt and pants and kneehigh boots. The only garment he wore that was different was a long, black, hooded cape. Only his face and hands were uncovered, and she wondered if he wasn't overwarm. Most Leolites wore only a loincloth, cape, and sandals as their thick body hair was sufficient enough for warmth. Perhaps he dressed in this manner rather than in uniform in order to teach his human charges by personal example. She began to think that perhaps she had judged him too hastily. But try as she might, she could think of no reason for him not to wear the black sash of the Protectorite. She knew that Aragon, as High Protector, would be bitterly disappointed to know that one of his trainees would think so little of his commission.

She found it even more perplexing that Vincent wore his goldenred mane loosely about his shoulders like a cub. During the rite of adulthood, a cub would customarily weave pridehouse ribbons into sidebraids : the braids signified adulthood and the ribbons designated membership in one of the twenty, great pridehouses of Leolite society. She couldn't imagine an adult without pridebraids ... the ribbons

indicated their rightful place in Leolite society. Even she wore the ribbons of LiSeea, her foster father's House, braided into her hair.

Zamara approached and stood by the kneeling warrior saying, "Jacob, son of Lord Zimbra, known as Vincent, and Catherine Chandler of Earth, do you accept the sword of LiSeea?"

"I do so accept", Little Jacob answered, his little boy's voice ringing out loud and clear filling the silent hall. He took the heavy sword in his little hands and held it high over his head as Zarmara spoke again.

"Then I do proclaim, as is my right as the female head of the House of LiSeea, that Jacob, of the House of LiSeea, is heir to Rigian, and as such shall hereafter be known as Emperor of the Three Worlds of Leon."

With that she knelt beside Aragon and touched the sword as she swore, "I, Zarmara, Blue Star of Afhodite, daughter of the Gold Star Servius and Eluinua Paater of Mumdane, of the House of LiSeea do swear thee my alligence" [sic].

Aragon then also touched the sword, "I, Aragon, Prince of Leolite, Lord High Protector, son of Rigian , of the House of LiSeea do pledge my alligence [sic] to thee, sire, and do await your command."

"Then hear this", the boy spoke, "I command that a regency of three be appointed to guide me until I come of rightful age to hold this sword on my own account. For the three I select, thee Prince Aragon, and thee Lady Zarmara, and my father. Do you accept?"
