Reactions and Reviews
This is the first of three stories in this zine which depict Kirk and Spock in some version of pre Reform Vulcan. In this one, which should be considered as a/u (as are all of them in actual fact) Spock has given up his career as a warrior in order to assist his father with running the clan estate after the death of his human mother. Kirk here is depicted as an advisor who Spock contacts to assist him in preparing for a war with another clan over water rights. One of the most refreshing aspects of this particular story is that the author makes no attempt to explain how Kirk and McCoy (who are clearly not of Vulcan origins) came to be on the planet to start with.As in the more normal setting of the Enterprise, he is accompanied by Dr McCoy and he and Kirk are good friends long before they meet up with Spock. Of course, Kirk and Spock are instantly attracted to each other and their relationship rapidly grows in the uncertain climate of an approaching conflict. The way in which their relationship develops is nicely depicted as is the potentially dangerous political climate at the time.
Of course, even in this environment Kirk is very recognisable, especially when he insists on going off alone to sneak into the enemy camp to obtain strategic information about their deployment etc. Although he is quite displeased when he discovers that McCoy has followed him although he ordered him to stay behind, the doctor’s presence does turn out quite useful, after Kirk is captured in an ambush as he is able to escape and warn the others Kirk has been taken. What happens during this battle and afterwards is very well described in a very realistic way especially Spock’s reactions, when he learns what is happening to his new lover and his struggle to prevent this from affecting the way in which the battle against Stonn’s soldiers should be carried out.[1]
‘Warrior’s Advice’ is also a rather silly tale, but what can one expect from characters named S’Pok, S’James, S’Arek, S’McCoy and S’Tonn… This story does have an adventuress tone, but I’ve never been fond of love-at-first-sight stories… [2]
"Warrior's Advice" by Greggia Seta has our old friends all natives of Vulcan. I enjoyed the story, and Chis Soto's illustrations were beautiful (but I didn't see why Kirk's ears weren't pointed, if he lived on Vulcan. The text said his tribe looked different, but it didn't mention round ears!). [3]
