Reactions and Reviews

WAITING by Charlotte Frost will appeal to anyone who saw a romantic spark between Kirk and Gillian Taylor in ST 4. Because I didn't see this spark, the story doesn't really interest me. But if you did see the chemistry Charlotte depicts in her story, you might find Gillian's reaction to her discovery that Kirk and Spock are lovers an interesting tale. [1]

I wanted very much to like this story because the concept has so much potential. The idea that Spock is incapable of melding is so fraught with dramatic impact. The story went relatively well until Spock regained his melding ability. There were a couple of minor problems before that point. 1) It was implied that McCoy diagnosed Spock's inability to meld. I would truly like to know how he did this since he is not a telepath. b) I think the fact that there was no scene with Sarek was a failure and an evasion. Neither of these problems really spoiled the story for me. It just made me think that it could have been better. However, after Spock was again capable of melding there were half a dozen errors that revealed that the author should do some research about the mind and telepathy before she tackles the subject again. Lovely short story focused only on Kirk’s conversation with Gillian (whale-woman). He meets her at a gala party and they go to her apartment where she comes on to him. In a compassionate rebuff, Kirk tells her about his relationship with Spock. Gillian reveals her loneliness and her difficulties in adjusting to this time period. Not much else—just a nice intimate vignette from a wonderful author. [3]
