Reactions and Reviews
1994
Nice exciting beginning as someone secretly infiltrates the computer with a virus that could kill Spock. This is a very interesting premise of there being a potential murderer on board the Enterprise.
A tiny nit-pick that I'll nit-pick anyway: When McCoy is explaining the disease to Kirk, why does he shift "to a more comfortable position"? Nothing in the narration or dialogue gave any reason for this- By itself, this would be a minor thing, but it occurred a number of times.
There are times when McCoy's role as Father Confessor to K and S works well and is integrated into the story. But sometimes it strays a little into unnecessary and is too pat. However. McCoy's character is well-drawn.
I wonder if the author is in the medical profession as there is lots of realistic medical stuff. I also really liked the name of the disease. It was identifiable and added a nice touch of realism.
Nice change as Kirk gives McCoy something to drink!
Also, there's a nice scene in the Centaurian bar with a character named Dr. Augustus Patoi.
Very satisfying solution to the mystery along with an excellent build-up of the villain, revealing just enough at a time to show an unbalanced mind.
And I can't help myself, but I just loved Dr. Patoi calling Kirk "Flyboy" Neat. [1]
A gripping story with a very good plot. Specially the scene in the bar was great (p. 26-29)! Unfortunately the ending was rather quick. I had loved to hear more of their talking. [2]

This might be classed by some as H/C, which I love, but also it contains a murder mystery—or attempted murder, as it will. Fortunately Spock doesn't succumb as quickly as he's supposed to do when deliberately infected with a mutant virus. Kind of a new idea, I believe. Kirk is both angry and scared and the whole thing could maybe have been told with a bit more emotion, but then, I'm a sucker for emotion. [3]
