Arcane

Season 1

Fans were surprised by the face reveal when Viktor tells Jayce his name, though many already suspected when they heard Viktor's accent. It was common to expect Viktor and Jayce's betrayal to occur similarly to how it was presented in LOL, as there were indicators they were slowly moving towards the same result: Viktor's interest in Jayce and his work (the way he looked at him during the trial etc.), his references to Jayce's ego (signing all the pages of his notebook)… The relationship was less caricaturised than in the video game.

Sexuality and Ethnicity

Unlike with Jayce, there aren't really distinct headcanons regarding his sexuality and ethnicity as Machine Herald (LOL) and Arcane Herald (Arcane). Viktor is mostly considered gay and white by fans.

Viktor is often associated with two main real world nationalities, mainly based on his accent: Russian (LOL) and Czech (Arcane).[2] Russian was seemingly the main real world nationality due to his original accent appearing Russian in the game. Some have stated this is just foreign fans not being familiar with eastern European accents, and deeming everything Russian.[3] Fans also believe that Jayce and Viktor were meant to be anecdotal representations of Capitalism and Communism, thus associating an USA and Russian nationality/accent to them.[4] Viktor's Arcane VA, Harry Lloyd, stated he tried to go for a Czech accent, claiming it made sense since he was a Nikola Tesla-y character.[5] Russia's invasion of Ukraine as since made a large number of fans less likely to use Russian in fics or art, except for Russian fans themselves, who still often headcanon Viktor this way. Due to this, there are large numbers of fanworks that feature "Vitya" as a nickname for Viktor (a Russian shortening). This nickname has fallen in disuse since Russian became a less liked nationality for him.

Appearance and health

There's much controversy regarding the way fans depict Viktor in fanworks, with Twitter's algorithm seemingly feeding into toxic behaviour amongst fans. The criticisms focus on the way he's represented both physically and mentally, with arguments and counterarguments breaching containment several times. One of the most common arguments is against his representation in some Jayce/Viktor works as a thin, elegant and/or feminine man. These fans believed that Viktor was only being represented this way due to stereotyped ideas of what an uke usually looked like in yaoi pairings (in reference to his shipping with Jayce). The counterargument was that Viktor indeed was not only shorter than Jayce, but thin, and as the herald, elegant and feminine. Many fans have created diagrams or made notes on canon stills of Arcane to show the size difference, accusing other fans of recycling old arguments for pairing it wasn't applicable to, simply because they disliked the ship. Some fans also criticised this argument, stating that there was no such backlash when Viktor was represented able-bodied, tall and/or buff when he was in a relationship with a female character.

It's notable that for many initial Twitter arguments there seemed to be some sort of moral defence attached to them, and much was started as vague posting, without any apparent example of work being put forth, but rather a generalised accusation.

Pairings

Common Tropes and Themes

  • Viktor is trans everything: Many works depict Viktor as trans. The amount is considerable in many areas of fandom, including shipping but also gaming - this includes fans of the League of Legends character who are not necessarily supportive of the trope, but nevertheless, believe that due to changes made to Viktor's skins, the character must be trans and/or gay.
  • Religious iconography: Mainly inspired by Viktor's appearance in his commune. Fans liken him to a real world messiah. He's mainly depicted like a saint from Christianity, with fans also making references to Mary, Jesus or Lucifer.[6]
  • Blond Hair: Canonically Viktor's hair begins to grow blonde near the base of his neck after hexcorisation. Fans like to call his herald or commune look "blonde balayage".[7] He also has completely white hair while in his astral realm and unrendered images of those scenes show the colour to be slightly darker, with fans dubbing it "platinum blond", "strawberry blond" or "bubble-gum blond".[8][9] Because of this, the use of blond hair or highlights in fanworks is very popular. Due to his complete shift in hair colour, some fans liken his change to a stereotypical "getting over a boy" reaction, since it happens after he leaves Jayce and once again when he fails to get Jayce to join him.
  • Disabled character: Canonical. Fans depict Viktor's disability in almost all fanworks, adapting their depictions to fit the universe or era he's in. His lung condition is less frequently depicted, either because it's mostly not visible or because the universe he's depicted in has allowed for a cure to be found. Although rare, lack of representation of his disability is usually met with strong criticism.
