Verity Ritchie, also known by their username verilybitchie, is a YouTuber and video essayist. Along with their partner Ada Černoša, they make videos about video games, TV shows, movies, and other elements of popular culture, often from a queer and feminist lens. Verity is trans and bi and a number of their videos discuss transness and/or bisexuality.[1]
Videos
A number of Verity's videos touch on fannish topics. Some discuss canons that are popular in fandom, with examples including Doctor Who vs Women,[2] The Queer History of The Lord of the Rings,[3] The Consumerist Dystopia of Harry Potter,[4] and Spider-Man, Class and Militarization in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[5] Others have touched on phenomena adjacent to fandom, such as Tumblr's popular Am I a Lesbian masterdoc.[6]
She came under fire from fans of Heartstopper for her video Why Queer TV Is Getting Worse, which included a character from Heartstopper in its thumbnail.[7][8]
Plagiarism by James Somerton
Verity and Ada are two of many, many queer creators who were revealed in late 2023 and early 2024 to have been plagiarized by fellow YouTuber James Somerton. Specifically, Somerton's video titled Video Games and the Choice to Be Gay plagiarized Verity and Ada's The Gay Button: How Bisexuality Changed Video Games.[9] hbomberguy did not specifically mention this example of plagiarism in his video Plagiarism and You(Tube), which exposed Somerton's plagiarism to the public, but he shouted verilybitchie out towards the end of his video as one of his favourite queer YouTube channels.[10]
