Veils of Morning is a Bodie/Doyle story by Rhiannon.

It is a story in the paper circuit.

It was based on the book and movie "Random Harvest."

In turn, a fan wrote a story based on "Veils of Morning." That fanfiction is Wings of Morning in Roses and Lavender.

Reactions and Reviews

After The Last Summer I was still feeling rather post-WWI-history-ish, so I picked up Rhiannon's Veils of Morning, because... well, just because it's Rhiannon so it's going to be gorgeous, and it's Rhiannon writing the lads, so it's going to be even more gorgeous... *g*

I wish I had a picture I could post with this - our lads looking all post-World-War-One era... I don't think I know of any, though... well, they'd need to look a bit bohemian at the same time, too! *g*

The story is based on "Random Harvest by James Hilton - that link is to the Project Gutenberg Australia version, and it was a film as well. I've not seen it yet, or read the original book, but they're on my list. Irene wrote a version of Rhiannon's Veils of Morning ("Wings of Morning") whilst she was waiting for Rhiannon to finish, and that's also a good read.

Veils of Morning tells the story of our lads as ex-soldiers returned from the war. Doyle bumps into Bodie - or "Smith" on Armistice Day 1918, only Smith has lost his memory, and has no idea who he is. Recognising symptoms of shellshock, Doyle takes him home to calm down, and Smith ends up staying, even when Doyle moves back to London to continue his bohemian artist's existence there. Then one day, Smith remembers who he was...

I never want it to end... *g* [1]

I like this a lot, and I really want to re-read it at the moment, and I have put my copy of the zine its in somewhere, and I can't find it. Argh! I seem to remember a crazy house full of artists - or a house full of crazy artists? And a very practical Bodie/Smith fixing a window? And then doing all sorts of odd jobs? [2]

I love Veils of Morning. How had you deprived yourself of this pleasure for so long? The portrait of Bohemian London is such fun, with Doyle's nice-but-dim society clients, and Bodie taking the Christmas pudding to the potters to cook in their kiln (if I remember correctly). [3]

I should have said that this was a many-times re-read... *g* It's wonderful, isn't it! Bodie took the pud, turkey and a bunloaf (there should be more bunloaf) to the bakers down the road I think - but Doyle did remember that they'd tried to cook the turkey (or maybe it was the pud) in the kiln one year, and nearly poisoned everyone... *g* And yes! - bohemian London is gorgeous, isn't it, all pigs trotters and eel pie, and daddy's-the-vicar... *g* Rhiannon's lads are wonderful, and even better because the world around them is so beautifully painted too... [4]

I just finished it a few days ago as well and oh, it's sooo good. There's just something about the way Rhiannon writes the lads that makes me want to completely immerse myself in their world. She's definitely one of the best AU writers I've come across in Pros (has she written any CI5 stories, btw? I can't think of any) and I just love the way she writes the lads' dialogue. It's so completely believable.

Like you, I didn't want it to end and I wanted to stay a part of the lads' world just a little bit longer.

I went on to read Irene's story immediately afterwards, and although it was a perfectly good story in its own right I just didn't get the same sense of involvement that I did with Rhiannon's fic. It all seemed a bit rushed to me, and the lads' relationship seemed to develop far too quickly to be totally believable.

I may just go and re-read Larton now... [5]
