Wings of Morning is a Bodie/Doyle story by Irene.

It was published in Roses and Lavender.

Veils of Morning is a story that was based on it. Both stories are based on the book and movie "Random Harvest."

Summary

"Doyle is a veteran of the 1914-18 war, and Beau is the amnesiac shell-shock victim Doyle finds wandering the streets. What is behind Beau's loss of memory? This is an alternate universe story written from a verbal description of Rhiannon's "Veils of Morning", published with her permission."

Reactions and Reviews

Irene wrote this story while waiting to get Rhiannon's Veils of Morning from the paper circulating library. Impatient to read the original, she started her own version based on a bare synopsis she'd been told. I don't know if the gestation of this story is unique in Pros fandom or not, but it's provided a fascinating companion piece to Rhiannon's classic story. If I had to choose only one of the two as a favourite, it would be Rhiannon's, but I enjoy Irene's version of the basic idea (which wasn't original to Rhiannon, either, but adapted from the film Random Harvest) and reread it frequently. Mostly, I find I want to read both stories when I get the urge to re-visit one. The basic story--Bodie as a WWI soldier with amnesia who meets Doyle--is like enough to set up a resonance, yet the differences in the tales and the styles in which they're told makes each stand entirely alone. Apart from the obvious differences in the authors' styles, Wings of Morning is a much more compact story. It takes place over a period of months rather than the several years Rhiannon relates. The supporting cast of characters that enlivens Rhiannon's tale also isn't present here; it's much more a cosy B/D tale, told with Irene's clean and charming style. [1]

I've been deeply into the Patrick O'Brian books lately - only a few to go now, though, *sniffs* - but last night I fancied some Pros, so I picked up Roses and Lavender at random, cos they're a good series of zines, and found myself with Irene's Wings of Morning, which is one of my favourite Pros fics by a favourite Pros author. She is one of a few authors who've apparently said they don't want their fic to go online, so it's only available on paper - but it's worth it... *g*

It's an AU story set just after World War I. Doyle was gassed in the trenches and now makes his living as a technical artist. Whilst on his way home one day he comes across a man who has completely lost his memory - and of course he takes him home... *g*

Irene is one of those lovely, gentle writers, whose words all mean something and who can make you feel the lads, their world, and what is happening to them... She's definitely worth tracking down if you're looking for a good read! [2]

Sounds similar to O. Yardley's 'Two Lovers', but with more sophisticated characters? I love Irene's writing. You're right that she creates a world you can fully believe in and experience. Wonderful stuff. [3]
