Varric/Hawke (also known by the portmanteau Vawke) is the pairing of Varric Tethras and Hawke in Dragon Age II. The pairing may be either het or slash due to Hawke's gender being selected by the player. However, Varric is not one of Hawke's four romance options in DA2, and thus the pairing is not considered canonical.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Friends to Lovers: Varric and Hawke may develop a deep friendship in Dragon Age II with certain player choices. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, Varric will express positive opinions about Hawke even if they were rivals in DA2, leading some to conclude their relationship improves between the two games or that Varric always has a grudging respect for Hawke regardless of worldstate. Many Varric/Hawke fics portray the pair as having become best friends during their years in Kirkwall. Some focus on the progression of their relationship from platonic camaraderie to romantic affection. This is often written as a slow burn due to various reasons, including Hawke being tied to another love interest, fearing the destruction of their friendship, and not recognizing their true feelings.
  • Unrequited Love: Some fanworks portray Varric as secretly carrying romantic feelings for Hawke. This may involve Hawke being romantically involved with another character or never having formed romantic attachments. The trope is especially common in stories in which Varric has been left to mourn a Hawke lost in the Fade during Inquisition.
