Reactions and Reviews

1992

My main criticism would be [it] needed to be longer, more fleshed out, especially toward the ending. "The Valentine" by Wells made Spock just a little too naive (make that stupid) for my taste, but the story wouldn't have worked otherwise. It was a sweet story. I think Uhura came out nicely drawn in this one.[1]

I found the story "The Valentine" by Kay Wells delightful. I found her theme believable, fresh and entirely natural to what might happen (if the characters were real) between Kirk and Spock. I'd like to read more of her work. "The Valentine" is my favorite story out of #14. [2]

This is what you could expect from a Valentine's Day story. I liked the fact that both Kirk and Spock had experience with homosex. It neatly disposes of all the cliches surrounding sexual innocence. I would like to point out that there are forms of heterosex that are more comfortable with pillows too. I also didn't care for the sexism of Kirk's characterization of heterosex as an exercise in dominance, as opposed to homosex being about sex between equals. Can no woman be Kirk's equal? [3]
