About

An interest check for a Detective Conan and Magic Kaito zine was posted on January 31, 2020[1]. Most notably, the interest check asked fans if the project should be for profit or not. Moderator applications opened on February 6, 2020, and closed on March 1, 2020[2][3]. Acceptance and rejection notices for mod applications were sent out on March 5, 2020[4].

The project was announced on March 18, 2020, as a for-profit zine with the theme of "digging deeper into as many characters as possible, and perhaps, find out what lies behind their facades"[5]. Contributor applications opened on the same day, and would end on April 8, 2020[6].

After mixed reception from fans over the applications guidelines, the organizers updated rules and provided explanation on choices made on the project organization on March 21, 2020[7]. They confirmed that a majority of fans voted for the project to be made for charity, but the organizers decided to make the project for-profit to support contributors who could be affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants initially were required to submit only work that was Detective Conan or Magic Kaito themed, but this rule was changed to allow for applications with less or no existing work in the zine's designated fandoms. Rules for submissions were also changed to allow for artists to submit their social media account or Google Drive folder instead of an official portfolio. Due to the project's for-profit status, the organizers originally restricted the application pool to anyone over 18 years old, but this rule was lifted provided that applicants had their own PayPal account.

Moderator applications opened again on April 7, 2020[8]. This opening closed on April 19, 2020, and reportedly contributors were chosen by this time[9]. Throughout the creation period, the project's Twitter account maintained activity by posting multiple memes and trivia about Detective Conan and Magic Kaito characters. The project was announced to finish content production on September 8, 2020[10]. No further updates were made until December 21, 2020, when the project's social media account began teasing future updates[11]. Contributor and moderator lineups were posted, and a game to guess the zine's name was hosted[12].

Preorders opened on December 25, 2020, with the following pricing tiers[13]:

A giveaway was hosted on Twitter starting from December 25, 2020, to January 1, 2021[14]. Giveaway participants were asked to follow the project's social media account, reply to the giveaway tweet with a picture of their favorite character from the shows. The winner was announced the next day after the giveaway to be Twitter user laracrofts_[15]. Preorders were expected to end on January 24, 2021, but were extended to February 14, 2021[16]. The digital zine continued to be available for preorder after the deadline[17].

Physical orders began shipping out on May 22, 2021[18]. By May 27th, all physical orders were shipped out[19]. Digital zines were mailed out on June 7, 2021[20]. A final sale for remaining merchandise and B-grade items was open on July 30, 2021, with an expected deadline of August 27, 2021, while stocks lasted[21]. The project was declared complete on August 28, 2021[22].
