Reactions and Reviews
"Up to Something" by Dana Austin Marsh is an eleven page story about a first time between a mirror universe Spock and Kirk. Dana is a writer I enjoy, and she didn't disappoint me this time. I highly recommend this story. Ifs very well written and quite enjoyable. It's not explicit but it's highly sensual. [1]
I have to say that I really look forward to seeing Ms. Marsh’s name in a zine these days. She’s a terrific author and I can always count on her stories being clever, involving, entertaining and hot. This one is all of the above! It concerns Kirk and Spock planning and scheming—unbeknownst to each other—to get the other into bed. Such a clever premise done with Ms. Marsh’s usual style and wit. I loved Kirk’s dangerous fury and Spock’s smoldering sexuality. My favorite scene was Kirk literally running from the bridge to his quarters to relieve his erection after engaging in one too many fantasies as he sat in his command chair.
And the sex scene—ohmygod! So hot. Goodness. Talk about thrashing on the carpet.... [2]
This is a good mirror story with some unique high points, as always in Ms. Marsh's stories. Good writing, too--it's vivid and close-up. I like the alternating Kirk-Spock-Kirk-Spock POV's. It takes place all in the Mirror universe. It's great to see what we come up with in the Mirror characters, different from the mainline Kirk and Spock, as far as the dynamics between them and how each goes about getting closer to the other. Admittedly, there is some dishonesty and manipulation going on here that we might not find in the mainline characters, but the feelings for each other underneath the machinations are still honest and deep; and once they fully reveal themselves to each other the games basically stop. And then, as we know, for these Mirror characters to find love is a rarity in their lives, so this adds a very special element to Mirror first-time stories. Kirk is jealous and frustrated when he finds out Spock took shore leave to indulge in a sexual encounter. (He doesn't know that Spock was with a stocky blond man....) There's a great scene of Kirk on the bridge fantasizing about each crewperson, often with some sadistic element; and then he starts fantasizing about Spock having sex with the various others. Maybe that's as close as he'd been able to get thus far to admitting he himself wants to have sex with Spock. Once he'd begun his seduction and Spock stood him up (what delicious audacity!), there's a hot and nasty scene of Kirk trying to be the one in charge. But it turns around, and Spock says one of the most gorgeous beautiful declarations of love and intent I've ever read. Kirk yields for the first time ever, which is quite satisfying. And then there's satisfying sex and a satisfying ending. [3]
