Up Jumped a Swagman is a Bodie/Doyle 76-page Professionals story by Meg Lewtan.
Summaries
"Peter Fox, B's first love and mentor in Angola reappears in England just as B&D start their relationship and arew also chasing an arab assassin that almost killed B in Africa. After much running around, Fox precedes B&D and kills the arab. It turns out he did it as a vendetta because he is still in love with B, even though he concedes the field to D, seeing B loves D not him. Throughout the story, the relationship between B&D has grown better and more stable, and all lived happily ever after."[1]
Reactions and Reviews
1989
I have any number of other personal favorites among Meg's stories. ... "Up Jumped a Swagman" is an interesting look at the relationship between these two men and a tantalizing glimpse of Bodie's murky past. [2]
1990
I love Lewtan's Up Jumped a Swagman. Doyle's jealousy over Bodie's former commander/lover is very realistically dealt with. Doyle is the possessive one, for all Bodie's protective posturing. Doyle is the hot jealous lover. And "Swagman" actually has a main plot other than B&D getting into bed (which they do frequently, but it seems to blend with the story). What a concept! It's fairly convoluted and -- for Meg -- well thought out (but that no one seems to be able to recognized the tune to "Waltzing Matilda" is straining it a bit.) [3]
A favorite of mine. The entire tale is well-written, well-handled, and just about the right length in that Meg rarely has the time (or space) to over-write. Bodie's old Commander is compellingly written -- I can see and hear him. Keeping B&D within the CI5 canon is a big help for me here. And I especially liked a jealous Doyle "fighting" for Bodie in a verbal confrontation that curdled the milk in their saucers. [4]
